Which rearend is the best for a daily driver?
My '70 Longbed cst has 4.11 gears in the rearend, all in good shape. but I am curious what the best gears are: 3.07-4.56 which is the best for cruising around town, and also highway driving. Thanks.

In the mid 3s would be a good all around gear. I ran a 12 bolt with a set of 3.40s under the longhorn for a while(75 diff). Got a set of richmond 4.10s now,fun to play with, but a little low for a lot of hyway travel..........69 longhorn.

i highly doubt you have actual 4.11, 4.11 is a super rare ratio,
you will have 3.,73 or 3.07 if its a 1/2 ton 67-72 truck, unless somoene put 4.11 aftermarket gear set in it. 3.07 is good for cruising and highway, 3.73 is good for acceleration and decent on highways depending on tire height. others can go into detail, im not gonna, the ratio to choose dpeend son what you really want the truck to do and what you are gonna use it for, tire hight and other factors affect engine rpm at any given vehicle speed, osme more suitable for certain speeds than others ------------------ -71/C-10(thx teeitup and crews!)350 4+4/CH465(thx 71Chev, GMCPaul, and CPNE)longfleet bed(thnx meathead95)!still building it- -'84 Z28(Z28) 1G1AP87GXEL100000 with H.O. 305/4bbl/190net/hp(L69) 3.73 rear(GT4/YC4) 700R4(MD8-MXO) & other goodies -79 G20 pass van, 350/th350/10bolt, paint is overrated Randy- Lincoln, IL r68c30@hotmail.com © RSS Enterprises 2000 |

I am in the process of switching from an open 3:08 to 3:42 gears with an Eaton posi. It will be th best of both worlds. I have a 402BB with a 400 auto, so I can lay back or punch it...either way I can have fun w/o going broke for gas.

Here in Dallas even around town drivin involves getting on the highway, so I was kinda looking for an all around gear. Thanks again guys ------------------ Bryan Dallas, Tx '70 Chevy C-10 Longbed '00 Softail Custom '99 Jeep Cherokee

I am running a 4.11. Great around town but not so on the highway. I have a turbo 350 trannie.
Would a long trip do any damage? It sure seems to wind up tight. ------------------ 1967 Chevy white SWB, 327, 350 trans., 95 Silverado power buckets, frenched third brake light, frenched antenna, digital gauges, power windows, tilt wheel, Vintage Air, Painless wiring, Cragar SS wheels. I wonder the same thing as Mike'67 sometimes. Mine came with the gears from the factory and I've been tossing around the idea of getting someting a little more fuel efficient, but man it sure is fun to drive around town

I replaced the 4.10 with 3.54 makes freeway driving a lot nicer and still has some spunk in town .
