1987 Tach question again.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/80-81...3A1|240%3A1318
Was this a good buy guys? Not the price, but did it make sense to find one with all of the wiring? I am new to this era truck style, but I have a 1987 Fuel injected 1 ton 4x4 and was wanting a tach very badly for it so I have been watching evilbay and bought this one. The truck currently has a normal gauge package without tach and has a 454 tbi, 400th auto, and a 205 tc. I know several people have made them work, but I am wanting to know if I will have to completely rewire this dash to work, or if it will be a lot easier since it comes with the original wiring with it? Will I be able to just splice it in to the existing harness wires? Thanks Trevor

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Well it looks like you got a good deal there. Looking at the pics, The first thing I would recommend is moving the light in the lower left warning light hole back up to the upper left hole where it belongs as the lead comming off of it is a fiber-optic light for your ashtray.
As for doing a dice-n-splice, not needed nor recommended. All you have to do is make a list where each lead goes to then simply repin the connector on the harness in your truck to match it. Use a small flat tipped jewlers screwdriver or a small pick to push the connectors out and swap them around. The only harness you WILL have to use there is the one for the tach itself.

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Ble 'Burban is right about switching the pins in the connector plug You shouldn't have to change many. Another thing you will need to add is the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) that mounts beside where the speedo cable goes on.

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Sierra, do I need to actually use the speed sensor? With having the 205tc and the 400 in my truck, I can plug it in directly don't I? I don't have a 700r4 and the 208 or 241 in my truck. Trevor

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Have you got cruise control? If so then you will need the sensor hooked up in order to use it. May be as simple as swapping the speedo heads between the clusters along with maybe drilling a mounting hole or 2. Just take a good cose look at the back side of the clusters to see what you may need to do in order to make it work.

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
I think this is where the computer gets its speed signal from also. It will all swap over right off the old speedo cluster.

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Sorry about my post yesterday, I wasn't really thinking when I wrote I have a 400th auto trans when I actually have the 465 4 speed. I have been doing so much reading about the 1 tons and the other trucks that I have, I blurted out the 400. Sorry about that guys. The truck is a 1987 Silverado 1 Ton 4x4 with the 454 tbi, 465 4 speed, and the 205 transfer case. It does not have cruise control though, so I should be fine without using any of the speed sensor stuff correct? Trevor

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
It would be best to hook it up. Shouldn't be to hard to do.

Re: 1987 Tach question again.
Nothing much to add other than you can swap you current speedo over if it has the signal on it.
