power steering box
on my 84 Suburban, the steering box is leaking. Most people that I talk to are saying that replacing the seals is just a temporary fix and rebuilding them is a serious pain. I've noticed that it's quite common with large tires for the steering boxes to start leaking after a while.
My question is if I get a new one, will it only last a year or two? I've got 33x12.50's. If so, is there an aftermarket one that will take the abuse of the larger tires? All suggestions appreciated, Dave

I assume you are talking about the gear box itself, which bolts to the frame.
The aftermarket gear boxes like AGR are way overpriced. Yes you can reseal the box. I have not done it but those who have said it is not a bad job to do. If you get a rebuilt box (or rebuild it yourself properly) and make sure to use PS fluid not ATF, then it should not leak with 33's or 44's. -- Mike

so what you're saying is that a new or rebuilt replacement shouldn't have a problem leaking later down the road with the larger tires as long as it's properly built using power steering fluid only. right?

Yes, that's what I'm saying.
