I agree

especially if you got it glowing hot and have changed the tensile strength on the bolt.

Also the old saying comes to mind

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

If you have the 1/2 inch bolts with 20 threads to the inch like mine then you torque them tight to 65 lbs..

So, to use them again means the threads have been stretched already once ,,like others suggested ,,best to get new U-bolts.
I did mine and this is the specs on what to torque them to..

If you are trying to just get by until you can put new ones in ,,I understand .. papa

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

When I had to get some off of a rear end at a wrecking yard I used a cheater bar and was able to snap the bolts. It takes a whole lot of torque, though.

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

Are you using a good breaker bar with a piece of pipe over it? that with heat should take care of it as long as the socket does not slip (nuts not rounded over) otherwise you must cut them.

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

a torch, and get the nuts red hot and hit them with a GOOD impact. Worked on my 69 when I replace the original control arms, and added 2" blocks last year. If the nuts are that stubborn, I agree with others that it is time for new ubolts.

If you can cut anywhere on the top of the U you should be able to get both sides off. If you cut on the side, you might have to cut both sides.

Just for your info.WD-40 stands for "Water Dispersant fomula 40" so contrary to popular belief WD-40 is not a very good penetrating oil.PB Blaster,Kroil,or Knock er loose are much better.
Also,if you're adding drop blocks you probably need longer U bolts anyway.

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

That nut is the one that was responsible for me snapping the yoke on an 18" 1/2 drive breaker bar. I'm sure there was a jack handle involved as well. I took the pieces back to Sears and got an all-time great comment from the counter guy: "Well, we don't see that happen very often."

Yeah, and I don't break 'em all that often either.

Kroil and big-a** cheater bar will take care of it.

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

cut precisely at the top of the axle. then you will be able to swivel the nut and off it goes.

a cutting wheel on a grinder is great for ths job. remember, it will make a pop when it's close to being cut through from the release of torque on the bolt itself.

I agree with every thing and wanted to reiterate the use of longer u bolts.

X2...cut them with a grinder and cut off wheel. 1/16 wheel works great.

Re: putting drop blocks on and cant get the nut off the u bolt..

Thats a stinky situation. When I did mine, 1/2 of the u-bolt was rusted solid inside the trailing arm. Look at my thread, lots of good tips on getting rusted stuff loosened up.
