Help with welding rods
I just picked up welding recently, and have a 30-230 amp stick welder. I have been using 6011 rods because of their ease of use and have gotten pretty darn good with them. I made a big BBQ grill, a 5-ton shop press, an air hose reel, and a custom exhaust for a lawnmore engine generator project, and learned that 230 amps is like a mini-plazma cutter(awesome!). Here is my question. I'm going to be doing a disc brake swap on the rear of my truck, and want a rod that will leave a much cleaner weld. Too much slag and spatter with the 6011, not to mention an arc that severly wanders and binds very easily. I want some good clean welds that dont require a lot of grinding. Any ideas?

Re: Help with welding rods
7018 is a very pretty rod, & if you get your gaps and heat just right the slag will come off like a shell and you will have very minimal splatter.

Re: Help with welding rods
6011 is what we call farm rod you can stick any thing together with it. along with 6010 both arnt a very good for a structual rod
your better off using 7018 like lytemup454 said 7018 will flex better and not crack like your 60xx rods. it also takes a little more heat to get it to lay out smooth. when you buy rod dont skimp on price a more expensive rod works better and is easier to work with don't go to home depot and but 7018 because the have it buy it at your local weld shop. also keep 7018 dry if you can keep it warm (above room temp) thats even better
