mystery squeel at start up
I have an 86 Chev PU with 305 V8 that I bought about a 2 months ago.
Has about 107K original miles with no apparent history of any major engine work. At start up there is a high pitch squeel that lasts about 20 seconds to 1 minute and then goes away. It only seems to occur at cold starts. At times the squeel is very load and can really hurt your ears. I have done all of the following and cannot figure out what the source is: 1. replaced water pump & hoses 2. replaced alternator 3. replaced belts 4. disconnected the air pump 5. disconnected power steering Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks |

Re: mystery squeel at start up
Tighten your belts. Sounds like they are the problem.

Re: mystery squeel at start up
the belts may have been loose for a long time and have literally polished the pulleys so that before they get warmed up from the motor heat, they slip and squeal.. you need to take off the belts and use a real light emory cloth and just take the shine off the pulleys then re install your belts and tighten to the proper tension and your squeal should go away

Yup I had the same problem. Make sure all of the required belts are installed. Sometimes the AC compressor binds up, make sure its turned off.

Re: mystery squeel at start up
You could always remove the belt and spin the pulleys to make sure there is no binding. While belts are removed start engine to verify the noise goes away. If the noise does go away remove the shine from the pulleys like Old Rusty said. I use a scotch brite pad (red).

Re: mystery squeel at start up
spray belt dressing on them thats the easy way to find out if you need to pull the belts up to buff the pulleys

Re: mystery squeel at start up
Had the same problem in my truck. It was the A/C compressor.

Re: mystery squeel at start up
i just get some dish soap and squirt it on the belts makes it smell real good at start up if it's a belt squeal it should go a way then tighten all belts but i would say clutch fan, or ac compressor going
