rain gutter on top of the cab

The rain gutter on top of the cab of my truck needs some repair. There are cracks in the material in the gutter. I was wondering if in that gutter that runs around the top is sealer or some kind of caulk. How is this repaired? Do you take it out and put new in or put new sealer or caulk over the top and then prime and paint. I was wondering. What is that area called?

He y that is the drip rail you are talking about. I would use a wire wheel on a drill or or die grinder to get the old seam sealer out then prime then put seam sealer then paint, you can get the seam sealer at any auto parts store. Good luck

Re: rain gutter on top of the cab

The owner before me put bathroom tub sealer (caulk) on the gutter. I removed it all today. I have the sealer but discovered a few pin holes on top of cab. I am going to fill in the holes, spray on rust prevention and encapsulator before I seal it.

My question is when I seal it back I only need to seal the seam where the top of cab is spot welded to body and then a little to cover the bottom of the gutter right?. Mine was level all the way around and I do not think this is right but I am not sure.

Re: rain gutter on top of the cab

the seam sealer should run the entire course of the drip rail....

My paint guy says he shave my drip rail and repaint it for $500. Good deal or bad.

Re: rain gutter on top of the cab

I was wondering if this is the correct body filler to put on the rain gutter on top of my cab. It is called windshield and body sealant.

I'm sure that the products mentioned will be fine, but from reading previous threads about this, I made a note of it for my future projects to use 3M automix #8307 self leveling seam sealer. It's thin enough to self-level and fill the channel.

From a website selling it:

Description

Two-part epoxy designed for roof ditches (door skin hem flanges) and rear body panels, including tail light areas, wheel well flanges, etc. Has a work time of approximately 15 minutes and can be painted in 30 minutes increasing productivity. Will require the use of 3M 08117 applicator gun.

Thats what I used....I cut used a screw driver and what ever else it took including a whire wheel to get it clean..once it was clean I painted in some epoxy primer.sealer with a small paint brush..I then applied the seam sealer....it left a smooth clean rain gutter/ drip rail then since my truck is all primer I hit it with a fresh coat of rhode island red oxide done looks good...

I bought mine in a chailing gun tube so be sure to look around the other spots in your truck ( lower windshiled seam, and under the apron under the wiper arm area in both corners) I dug out some of the old dry stuff and gave it a fresh coat
