Steering wheel / Horn???
I need a little guidance in installing a factor steering wheel back on my 71. Does the steering wheel constantly hold down the brass contact? I have tried to install the wheel where the contact would not touch, but I cannot find a way to do so. With the wheel installed the horn will continue to blow. Thanks in advance for your help.

#11 and #9 if you have a tilt, you need that piece out of a tilt, if you have a non tilt, then you need it from a non tilt

Thanks...it looks like I need the horn contact kit. I have the horn cup and retainer. The wheel is installed, but no horn for now.

You need #9 (horn contact kit) and #11 (cancel cam). I don't see any evidence of tilt from these pictures. Also it appears you need #8 as posted by 68gmcee.

I bought one of those contact kits and tried to install it last night. The little nylon isolator which is on the assembly picture above after the spring popped out as I was installing and now is gone for good. Any suggestions on what I could use in place? Is this isolator necessary? Seems to me that it just keeps tension on the spring without letting the spring hit the metal retaining plate. Any ideas? I hate to buy another kit just for that little isolator.

Got a new plastic 'isolator' now I just need to figure out the order of assembly. The exploded drawing in the LMC catalog shows it just pressing the spring into the cam/slip ring. Anyone have any pictures of this installed? Do I need another larger spring to go around the nut holding the steering wheel on?

This image shows the inside of the horn compartment with the red plastic bushing, as well as the spring and plastic isolator, being held in place with an allen wrench for assembly. Is this the correct order of assembly?
This shows the retaining plate, and the cup being put in place before being screwed on. Once it's all assembled, the horn doesn't work. The button doesn't depress, and feels like it's missing a spring. This can't be the correct assembly as illustrated in the catalog because the button doesn't contact anything, and doesn't have any 'spring' to it. Can someone show me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, |

Are you putting the dished plate so the bow in it is down? Kinda like an upside down cup? It's been awhile but if memory serves, thats what provides the spring in the device.Hard to remember though. Btw where did you find the spring/contact/isolater thingy? I had a heck of a time trying to locate one.

I tried putting it in both ways and didn't have success either way unless maybe I didn't get it to seat right. The isolator I picked up from a local place here in Phoenix called Grumpy's Truck Parts. I had to buy another contact kit and it came in the kit. I'll try to assemble again with the dish plate bowed outward.

the contact pin should be sticking out of the isolator, to make contact with the dish plate. I am remembering the spring in the cam/slip ring first, followed by the pin and then the isolator to hold the pin and spring in place. The red plastic ring goes in the top of the cup followed by the cup and then the dish. Seems to me the high edge of the dish sticks up so that when the horn pad is pressed down the dish makes contact with the metal part of the inside of the steering wheel. The dish pointing up also is the spring for the cup and attached horn pad.

Hootz got it. Actually it was a combination of what you both said. The dish had to be placed in there so that it was convex (dished out), and the reason I was struggling with it was because I was looking at the diagram on the LMC catalog. They have the pin going into the slip ring first, then the spring, then the isolator. The spring and the isolator are the same diameter, so the isolator wouldn't allow the spring to slip inside of it. When I changed the order, per hootz's outline, the top of the pin pushed on the spring, and the pin went through the isolator making contact with the plate as it should. BTW, that contact kit was a piece of crap. I had to grind the pin head down to get it to fit into the cam/slip ring, and the plate and cup in the new kit were completely corroded, as if they had been sitting in acid for their entire shelf life, so I re-used the OEM pieces. Thanks for your help.

Having a similar issue. Do I just shove the black plastic retainer down to keep the spring in? Just don't won't to break and have to buy again. Had to grind the head of the pin also.

Please post pictures of the final assembly. I too am having the same issue and it is due to the LMC diagram. Plate with bow side up, then where does the plastic red ring go under the plate or into the cup?

I'll take a couple pictures and post tonight or tomorrow. If I remember correctly, you put the spring in, then the pin, and isolator around the shaft of the pin. 9teen, try reversing the order of the pin and spring, keeping the pin oriented how you have it so that it cannot pass through the spring, but rather the flange on the pin rests on the spring. I'll confirm when I can either tonight or tomorrow.
