Drum Brakes on a '66 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Attempting to replace the front wheel cylinders on my '66 C-20. The two cylinders that are on the front wheels are different.

Also, on the right front, there is an extra bracket above the cylinder. Does anyone know what this is and why it is only on one wheel?

from the pics they look the same.....

The picture with the shoes still on is the left side; the bracket in question is on the right side.

Since the cylinder did not fit on the left side, I put the hub and wheel back on, and pulled the right side apart to see what was going on, and found that bracket.

On the pic with the shoes, if you look at the top edges of the cylinder, you do not see the edges of the bracket that is in the picture in question.

I'll go pull the wheel off tomorrow and try to get a better comparison picture

that "bracket" is there to keep the pistons in the wheel cylinder if it didn't have the shoes and the drum on, or if the shoes wore too far down and wouldn't hold the pistons in....I believe the wheel cylinders specific to the L/F and R/F, so could you have gotten 2 left cylinders?

in it's 40+ years of existence, one of the backing plates could have been changed. Just take the wheel cylnder off and go match one up. I don't know why you are changing them as they don't appear to be leaking. Pull back the rubber and see if fluid comes out, if so then replace, otherwise they are still good. For now anyway.

That is my guess; the numbers on the two cylinders were no where close to matching. I'll just match each one up individually. Disks are in the future...somewhere....

The right front had fluid seeping out of the front side.
