alternator problem's
I never had trouble with my Alt. until I got my stereo system put in about a year and a half ago. Since then I have gone through two. Before I go down and get a new one is there a larger amp one that I can get instead of the the 62 amp or what ever it is that is a direct replacment? Its a 1971 half ton with a 350. Would changing the voltage meter help any?

You may want to do a search on installing a single wire alt.
or try this outfit http://www.alternatorparts.com/gm_al...grade_kits.htm

Do you still have the external regulator? If so I would look at upgradeing that to the internal alternator. I did this about two months ago and could not believe the difference it made, I also went with a brand new power master 140 amp alt. But if you going to keep the old external set up, just go to a place that you can get a new one from, I have bought alternators from Autozone in the past that were bad right out of the box. Matter of a fact that has happened to me twice. Had them check it out right out the box and it was no good.

Yes, there are larger amp alternators. Just ask. If you have trouble, tell them your 71 comes with A/C and that will make the 80 amp pop up on their screen. Usually they have options, but you have to pay more for more amps. As Sam mentioned, you can get alternators that are much, much larger if you want.

Must be one bad@ss stereo...lol. If you go with one of the really big alternators you need to replace the wire from the alternator to the battery as the stock one can't handle 140 amps
