needs help getting it running
I got the tune up done on the suburban and i still cannot getting it running. Ive got a few issues that i know of, and probably some that i dont.
I just had this truck running last week and drove it all over the yard both friday and saturday. 1st issue- old nasty gas in the tank, so i have been pouring fuel down the carb to get it to fire. which has worked so far. 2nd issue- when you turn the key the truck will run, but the second you turn the key from the start position (when the starter is running) it dies instantly. I know i need to drop the tank and replace the fuel lines to clean everything, but where should i start? I wouldnt mind getting it running again that way i know im not wasting my time. Thanks!!

Re: needs help getting it nunning
First I would run gas line from a gas can on teh ground into the fuel pump, therefore byopassing the nasty tank. That way you can keep it running until you get hte fuel tank and lines cleaned. How about the carb, has that been cleaned out? As far as it not running in any position except start, I'm not sure where to go there, I'm no wiring expert.

What is this wire on the back of the coil supposed to be connected to?
Where does this ground wire connect to?

Re: needs help getting it running
Actually i replaced the yellow wire with a new one. the yellow one had the insulation worn off in a couple places. Where is the black wire on the back of the coil supposed to go?

Re: needs help getting it running
The yellow wir is a bypass for starting points style ignition. There should also be another wire(red or purple I "think" that has resistance built into it.12 volts at start and then about 9 at runfrom the resistance wire. The yellow is only powered during start.
If you can read a wiring diagram here's a link that may help.If you can't....... "there's no time like now" http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...iring+diagrams

Re: needs help getting it running
In the first of 3 pictures you have a capacitor, that looks like the condenser inside the distributor It is for radio interference. NOT NEEDED TO GET TRUCK TO RUN.
The second picture is a ground wire that should be attached to the firewall and to the engine Need a wiring schematic to tell you about which wire is the one you want to be connected to the + side of the coil. I do see a wire that is attached to the coil and goes to the distributor. Make sure that is on the - side of the coil. You could have one of two problems in respect to the truck running in the start position. Wiring to the distributor is wrong, or a bad ignition switch. If you have a multimeter, make sure that you have 12+ when the engine is cranking over at the + side of the coil. You will see the voltage drop to about 9v+ with the engine running. If I remember right there are two wires attached together that go to the + side of the coil. One comes from the starter to give the distributor 12+ when cranking, and when the engine starts, and you let go of the key, you should have 9v+ at the + side of the coil. Try holding the ignition switch a bit past run, and not keeping the starter engaged and see if you can keep it running long enough to check voltage at the coil.
