I must just be dumb
I am trying to separate the drums from the spindles on my C20 project. Cant seem to find that "magic part" that connects them. Can any one help me out on this or could they just be rusted that bad

Re: I must just be dumb
Separate the drums from the spindles? Did you remove the wheel bearings? If you have, then the shoes are probably just too tight. Sometimes you can get lucky and back them off via the adjuster through the backing plate. Worst case, try prying firmly with a large pry bar between the drum and backing plate. If that doesn't work, take a cut off wheel and HACK the drum to pieces until it falls off... HAHA

Re: I must just be dumb
More than likely if you haven't had them off for a while, they will be rusty around the bolts and center hub. For this you can take a hammer and smack around the edge until it comes loose. I have never broke one doing this.
The other problem could be that the brake shoes have worn a groove out into the drum. You would have to loosen the brake adjuster wheel to lift them out of that worn groove so the drum will slide off. Dennis |

DANG IT! I always forget to use a hammer when things go awry!!! All kidding aside, that does work pretty well.

wow, call yourself dumb and every one responds LOL. I just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing some thing. I tried a hammer but was worried about breaking the drum. I will get a bigger hammer and try it again lol.

Re: I must just be dumb
If you're removing them hub and all then it will be the brake shoes worn into a grove. In that case, adjust some slack and it will come off easily. If you got the rivets out of the hub/drum assembly and have backed off the adjuster, you might try using a torch to heat the drum and a BFH.

Re: I must just be dumb
The drum isn't a slip fit... PUT DOWN THE HAMMER
The drum is rivited to the hub assembly. You need to either grind the rivits down, or remove the nut in the hub that holds it all to the spindle. |

Re: I must just be dumb
Also try cleaning or filing down the outside edge of the center hub that protrudes from the center of the drum. Sometime dirt and rust forms there and prevents the drum from slipping off.
