Chevy Small Block: 336 338 340 ???
Hi,
I have a bunch of old tired 305 cui small blocks (at least 4 !!) and I read about putting stroker kits (eagle) in them to get CIs like shown above...depending on overbore. Now - what do you think about that? What about a 340ci ? I know building 383s and similar stuff does make more sense - BUT I want to do something with those 305s..... I can`t wait to hear your suggestions .... ! So just feel free to drop a line or two !! Rob

I hate to be the negative nancy....but you're still stuck with those tiny 305 bores, and SBC 23* heads have a hard time making power on them. I personally wouldn't ever dump a dime into a 305 when 350 blocks are so plentiful. Not saying you can't make a strong engine that way, but you'd have a much stronger motor spending that same amount of money on a 4"+ bore motor......
Now if you're just looking for something to do with an old 305......spray it till she pukes.

yea, i agree, the machine shops have so many 305's around here that they just use them for bolts now, and theres no making power with them, 350's are still plentiful and can be had pretty cheap, just a thought

No replacement for displacement. 350 rotating assemblies can be had all day long on craigslist for $100. Take the 4 305 blocks to the scrapper and you'll have enough money to buy one!

if the 305s are running motors... get a pare of vortec heads(your gonna prolly get em for a 350 anyways) and a decent roller cam/valve train(again needed for a 350), and sprey em all till they blow likeswb85 said and when your done with all the 305s, youve had a lot of fun and learning that way when you build a real motor(350-400) you can swap the parts you alredy have and itll all bolt togather ! ... just my 2 cents

id keep a set of 305 heads tho, put em on a 350 and you get a little better compression

who says? granted, it is true to some extent, but, depends mostly on the intake you use i got a set on my el camino, 383, port and polished and bigger valves, had a victor junior, and had no power up top, but switched to a performer rpm, and gained some, heard a weiand stealth would give some more, but not sure, the elky is a street car anyways, no need for top end

Doesn't matter what intake you use......by the time you spend the money to make the 305 heads "decent" with porting/polishing, valves/valvejob.....you've spent more money than a set of stock vortecs cost.....and the worked 305's still won't outperform vortecs. The only parts from a 305 worth saving is the crank and tins.

Re: Chevy Small Block: 336 338 340 ???
The person who built my engine is an old school gearhead > about my age , around 60 . Also held many drag records in this area back when . He said some of his best times were had with 305 heads on a 350 in old corvettes. He did it for compression > would shave them all that they would tolerate > would extensivelly port & polish them & create a screamer . His reputation was known for his head work . Of course this was before all the technologically advanced head design ther is available now . thought this was intereting & wanted to share .
