Re: 700r4 transmission problem

Only the performance cars (Vette's, Z/28's, Trans Am's) with the 700R4 will do a full throttle 3-4 upshift. There is nothing wrong with your transmission, it was just designed to do exactly what it is doing.

You can get the parts to change out in your transmission valve body to get it to do the full throttle 3-4 shift fairly cheaply.

The hard shifting may be that the TV cable needs adjusting so the transmission thinks you are harder on the throttle than you actually are. Check your service manual for the adjustment procedure.

Re: 700r4 transmission problem

If the TV cable is maladjusted, you're risking damage to the trans. Check it out and adjust as needed.

Re: 700r4 transmission problem

There is a simple procedure listed in the service manual on how to adjust the TV cable. I forget the exact process off hand so I won't mislead you on how it is done but it only look about thirty seconds to do it on my 90 Z71.

As far as rebuilding the 700R4 you are better off taking it to a reputable shop and having them rebuild it for you and upgrade a few parts while they are in there so it will last. Expect to pay close to $1200 to get it done if you hand them the transmission.

Re: 700r4 transmission problem

The 700R4 is the hardest of the autos to rebuild!!! Mine has the police/vette package for WOT shifting. I've tried it but run out of road before it shifts. I've hit speeds of at least ~110 and still has not shifted up. The truck needs a little more work to take it up above 120. The OD WOT shift is not recommended for engines with more than 225 or so horsepower. I wonder why?
Cost for a tranny like mine $1700! However you can beat on it all day and not sweat.
