Maybe a little basic question but I am going to shop for a truck in the next few months. Style and looks wise I like the 69-78 models grill, front end and overall appearance best.
What I am wondering is what the main differences and changes were from the 67/72 generation and the 73/87 generation besides new smog controls starting in 73. It seems that many of the features I would look for or retro-fit (PS/PDB/AC/etc.) are more readily available on the later generation and pricing maybe a little cheaper.
Can the board members share their thoughts help me resolve whether I need to focus on the earlier gen exclusively or am I okay with say 73-78 as well. Does anyone know thedeal on emissions testing if I have a non-original engine? I live in New Jersey so I'm sure whatever the answer is it will not be simple.

Everything changed with the "square" body style released in 1973. 69-72 Blazers are very different from 73+ - different body, dimensions, interior, top, etc. Much of the mechanicals (engine parts, etc) are interchangeable, but that's about it.

The first generation Blazers are 1969-1972. Second generation 1973-1975. In 1976 they kept the basic look of the Blazer the same as the 73-75 model, but the full, removable top was replaced with a half top (fixed roof over the driver's compartment, removable over the rear passenger compartment.)

The first generation Blazers are the most desirable, hardest to find and the most expensive with second generations quickly catching up. 76+ Blazers are easy to find and still very affordable (not that you can't find good deals on the others still).

If you want the full convertible, look for either a 69-72 or a 73-75 rig. Production numbers and specs can be found at http://coloradok5.com/specs.shtml.

If you like the first generation Blazer (and who wouldn't) but want some of the later options, a 72 is a good choice. Mine came from the factory with power disc brakes, power steering, and air conditioning. I'm not sure, but I think some of the 71s had the same options.
