I FOUND A 1982 CHEVY 1/2 TON PICKUP WITH THE 5.7 OLDSMOBILE DIESEL ..
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYBODY HERE HAS DONE THE DIESEL TO GAS CONVERSION .. I HAVE A SPARE OLDS GAS 350 ENGINE ..I KNOW THAT IT WILL BOLT UP DIRECTLY ... SO I WANTED TO MAKE USE OF IT FOR NOW IF I GOT THE TRUCK .. LATER I CAN GO ALL CHEVY , I WASN'T SURE WHAT CHANGES I WOULD NEED TO MAKE SO IT WILL WORK ..

Re: 82 Chevrolet Diesel Conversion Question ..

I have a 79 that was converted. You will have to use the bottom holes for motor mounts ,the fuel tanks will have to be drained and flushed. Use the small fuel line as a fuel return, the olds pump has three lines. Just tag all your wires, and good luck. By the way i just took out the olds and am putting in a 350.

Re: 82 Chevrolet Diesel Conversion Question ..

If it's an 82 and that's the original engine, it isn't a 350.

82 was the first year of the 6.2 diesel. It has nothing to do with an Olds 350 and has a different transmission mounting pattern. The 6.2 diesel is much closer to a Chevy 350, not in construction, just in engine and transmission mount locations.

If the truck really has the Olds Diesel, is it an 81?

Re: 82 Chevrolet Diesel Conversion Question ..

I did that conversion too. Mine is a 1984 and had the 6,2 Diesel with TH 700.
I have put in a Chevy 305 Small Block with TH350 tranny and a different driveshaft with 12 bolt axle out of a 1980 C10.
I got rid of that hydroboost system and installed the brake booster and brake cylinder from the 1980 c10 as well.

It was pretty easy - ahh - I had to use a different type of transmission crossmenber as well - the orginal didn`t fit for a TH350 !!

If it is the olds diesel iwould change too! I did exactly that and changed to a 6.2 liter diesel. That was a great improvement and that motor had some parteating power and crunched the tranny, alternator ,powersteeringpump and all the parts that were from the oldsdiesel!
In the progress of the frameoff resto i did i decided to go and put a smallblock 350 gasengine in because of the looks and easier and cheaper maintenance!
With the gasprices these days i would change back but would use a 6.5 liter diesel with turbo!
Since my truck is more hobby to me i´d like to insall a LS gasengine!
The swap from diesel to gas isn´t to complicated because you need less wiring and have more room in the enginecompartment!

In my case the powersteeringpump with the three outlets was defective and i couldn´t get the right new one. Also i think there was a fittingproblem with the brackets. The hydroboostsystem itself is cool and i still have it in my storage!
Since i bought a whole bunch of parts with a working vacuumbooster and a new chrome steeringpump i installed them and they work nice too!
If i find one nice pump and some brackets i may reconvert to hydroboost!

Re: 82 Chevrolet Diesel Conversion Question ..

If the tranny has the Olds bolt pattern, I think it would be bad ass to put a 455 in it. alot of people would think it was just a big block, but for those of use who know...
