Bed Dissasembly
Are there any spot welds to disassembling a wood floor bed? My truck is 200km away from me but i want to cut my bed down to a short bed this winter so that i have to make the frame match in the summer. The easiest way for me to do this is disassemble the entire bed bring it home, not only for transport but storage. How difficult is this?
Might aswell share the other half of my plan while i am at it, so you can all point out the flaws. Since the edges where where the wood bolts in are all rusted, my bed strips are all rusted and the wood is currently pressure treated. I plan on getting a rusty bed from a 73-87(a dime a dozen around here) with a good floor and cutting it up to match. I will then weld it in right over the rails. Thanks Matthew Last edited by Mister laugh; 09-04-2009 at 02:23 AM. |

Re: Bed Dissasembly
There are only two places I found that were welded, when I disassembled my wood floor LWB. Where the bedsides meet the rear cross piece, there are welds. Here's a pic. Look for the shiny area at the bottom of the rear post.

Re: Bed Dissasembly
Cuttting down the bed is a fairly straight-forward deal and as previously mentioned the only two welds are at the back where the sides meet the cross sill. Now regarding the floor. Being as your flanges are all rusted out fabbing up a steel floor from a donor is probably the cheapest way to go. Of course- you could replace those flanges and get some new wood and bed strips and restore the factory floor.....but that would cost more. It really depends on what your ambitions for your ride are.

Re: Bed Dissasembly
This truck is never going to be a factory resto anyway, i think the metal floor is the way to go as far as price and ease of installation.
