Mufflers?????

I have an 85 Chevy shortbed with a 383 sttroker that has 461 HP. Currently I'm running 3" exhaust with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers with turn downs under the bed. I want something quieter! These 40's are way to loud. Is there really that much difference in the 50 series? Dynamax, Magnaflows?

What have you guys found to be a decent muffler? I don't want to choke it down to the point of hindering performance, but I don't want to get any tickets for noise or wake the neighbors up when I leave for work in the morning.

Any help is appreciated!

EC

Re: Mufflers?????

I think if you put full tailpipes on it would quiten it down some.

I've been recommending dynamax ultraflos for awhile now. They are a straight through design, so they aren't restrictive at all. But they are super super quiet, somehow? I have used them on three cars now. They are currently on my 5.0 foxbody with no cats. You can barely hear it at idle through it's 2.5" tubing, but it sounds fairly aggressive at WOT. With no popping or gurgleing.

Re: Mufflers?????

Agreed that running it out the back of the truck will quiet it down a ton. I'll second the ultra-flo's, they sound really good.

Re: Mufflers?????

My 50 series flow masters are a real warm sounding muffler but not loud at all.

Re: Mufflers?????

I say run the pipes all the way out and add a 20" resonator before the flowmaster. I have that type of set up on my car and it sounds real mellow. can hardly hear it at idle and inside is a perfect level. I love it!

Re: Mufflers?????

The more pipe you have after the mufflers will quiet it down some too.

Re: Mufflers?????

if you're worried about power loss why are you running a blowmaster?

ultra flow would be your best bet... followed by magnaflow.. they're pretty quite when you're off the gas...

I'd run xr-1's.. but i'm not sure how much quieter they would be... should make more pwoer though.

Re: Mufflers?????

My reference to power loss was to prevent the suggestion of going with stock mufflers. I bought the truck without an engine, so once I got it running I was disappointed how loud it was, I know nothing of how old the Flowmaster's are. So I thought I would see what suggestions I could get before spending money on junk muffs.

Like I said I'll post back when I fix the problem.

Re: Mufflers?????

my big block has headers and 3" pipes. had flows, 40 series and was just unbearable on the road-cruising was cool but...went with 2 walker mufflers for a 93 3500 dually, 3' in and out, still has a growl but quiet on the road. forget the numberbut if you look it up on auto zones site, they are 44.95 @

Re: Mufflers?????

I bought a truck that had generic turbo mufflers on it. They were pretty tame at idle and cruise but got louder at WOT. No interior resonance. They flow really well and they are really inexpensive.

Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow's are a good choice. It's the 40 series sound but turned down a level and the booming resonance taken away. As far as how they flow compared to other mufflers, I don't know, but I installed 2 of them with 2.5 inch pipe and an H pipe hoping that the setup would flow enough.
