'59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

I just got my first project truck. I have driven this a few times around the neighborhood and got it up to about 70mph. That was fun!

I am basically the third owner. She was a dry cleaner's delivery van for 35 years in Mississippi. Then sold to my pal in '85. He used it as his primary vehicle until 7 years ago, when she got parked in a garage. Better than a field or driveway.

The gas tank was nicely rusted, sending a lot of rust flakes to the fuel filter. After searching the country and Canada for a new tank, the original tank is now being relined. Now to find a sending unit!

Plans are to bring it close to original with some safety additions, electronic ignition, front disc brakes, cotton air filter, etc.

Then it will become "The Inspector Dave mobile!" I have a few friends that are doing the design work for the paint job.

Hope you guys will enjoy the process.

Kindest,
-Dave

Still waiting on the tank. Hopefully we will have it tomorrow and I will be ready for Good Guys Nashville this weekend. Anybody going to be around Nashville this weekend? The Lane Motor Museum is having a party Saturday night. BBQ, Cars, Bars, and Rock'n Roll!

Re: '59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

Bessie is on the road! The gas tank is in with a universal sending unit. She runs like a beauty! Now on to some door mechanics and wiring harness. At least I can drive to the car show this weekend!

Re: '59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

Started Bessie up the other day to find oil dripping on the floor board. Ouch!

Started to replace the oil gauge line. This led me to updating some wiring for the dash and finding out that there was a broken spindle in my speedometer, which is why the odometer has been stuck at 60003.4 since some time in the 80's. I have about half of the wiring harness installed.

I know I have to replace the blinker switch and canceling plate. Anyone know how I can get to this on the steering column. There is a horn in the middle of the steering wheel, which I see as an obstacle. I have not been able to find a good diagram of this area.

Re: '59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

The new wiring harness is in. The dash is awaiting the new speedometer. She will not turn over. She tries. It seems that all the wires are in the right place. One more review of the wiring diagram. Does the dash need to be in to complete the circuits for the engine to turn over?

Re: '59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

The amp meter was the trick! Bessie is running better than ever! She has a much needed new wiring harness installed and every thing seems to be working. I am awaiting some more parts for some more upgrades.

My daughter just got a 57 truck and that will be in the works soon.

Re: '59 Chevy Panel "Don't Call It a Come Back!"

Bessie is stalling when I hit the gas hard or when going up hills. Anybody have a good solution?

I places in a MSD coil and HEI module. My spark wires are 7mm. My 235 is leaking oil out of every orifice, gasket, etc. After 600,000 miles she is ready for a new engine. I am wanting to keep her running until the coffers churn up some money.

The carb has been rebuilt in the last six months. Gas lines have been flushed.
