hey guys, i looked around and the only thing that came up was this thread, which is a great how to btw..

im bagging the rear of my 67 suburban and i need to know what size bolt the bottom bolt is that goes where the spring bolt was. im going to lowes tomorrow and i dont wanna be a douche and sit there guessing with the million bolts they have lol. also, how long and what size for the top 2 bolts that bolt the bag to the frame. i basically just want to be in and out and not diddle around looking for different ones. can anyone help me out, thanks!

3/8" X4" make sure it's grade 8. And the washer you see in that thread is from a harmonic balancer....i got a small thin washer to capture the bolt and a thicker one to give it some stability to create the same effect.

The top should be 3/8 as well....believe they are the same size...Take the bag with you and you can verify it...(or test at home w/ a 3/8" bolt...probably only need to be 2" or so on top I'd imagine but haven't gotten to that point on mine...maybe someone else will chime in...

2 Inch for top grade 8 will work. Are you mounting bag directly to frame or plate then frame?

the threads that go into the bags are 3/8-16

mounting them directly to the frame, well, that little plate that the spring used to bolt to thats riveted on the frame. lowes wouldnt carry a harmonic balancer washer though right? could just a big washer work, or a few big washers from lowes?

Just get the thickest wash they have that will fit the bolt..

i just got back and got all the grade 8 bolts. they didnt have grade 8 lock nuts so i got steel ones along with fender washers for the bottom bag bolt and grade 8 washers for the top bag bolts. could i reuse the spring bolt washers instead of the ones i got from lowes? they look pretty good after 42 years, the ones from lowes look pretty good too but was just wondering.

one more thing, what did you guys use to drill the fitting hole in the frame? i bought a 3/4" drill bit, too small. i bought a step drill bit that goes up to like 1 an 3/8 or something like that but the bit is getting stuck and spinning free without cutting metal. seemed like it smoothed that step on the drill bit now, this is getting ridiculous.

i sliced my arm and nearly broke my pinky finger now, lol. any ideas of something easier?

I haven't done it yet, but I bought a nice metal hole saw 1 1/2" to make that cut.

grade 8 is overdoing it. Everyone likes to hear "grade 8" but you would probably never break a grade 2.

nothing wrong with using grade 8 though. but its certainly not a necessity, nothings going to break without it. If it did then you have problems in the deisgn or install that makes the bag pull against the bolt.

let me know of this works. I got a step drill bit and it just smoothed out the step on the bit lol. ima try it again with a stronger drill and see what happens
