Need help with Dually question

I think im going to purchase a dually crew cab but apparently it used to have a diesel engine before. Now my question is...What would I have to change in it to make it work on pump gas? Im thinking about throwing a big block in it and later on bagging it with big rig wheels. All help appreciated.

Re: Need help with Dually question

You will need to change the sending units in the gas tank. I imagine you will have to do some rerouting of the fuel line in the engine compartment. Starter and alternator shouldn't be a problem, since both engines used them, but you will need power to the distributor, which you can get from the injector pump wire if I recall. Other than that, it should be straightforward like any other engine swap.

Are you sure it used to be a diesel? I had a local guy buy a 79 dually and some mechanic told him it used to be a diesel cause it had two batteries and the hydroboost

Re: Need help with Dually question

I wont get to see the truck til tomorrow or saturday so not totally sure if it was a diesel. I do remember the guy telling me that the truck had a 6.2 diesel engine that he took out so it might of had one. I guess it shouldnt be a big problem doing a swap just wanted to make sure it wouldnt make me pull hair out. I thought about putting a 6.0 in it but I havent ran into one yet so we'll see.

Re: Need help with Dually question

One problem may be the bell housing on the transmission. SOme used the BOP bolt pattern, but I dont remember for sure if the 6.2 did. What year is it?
I dont know why youd have to change the sending units is the fuel tank unless its got the intank fuel pumps.(not arguing woth ya strom chaser, hoping to learn something) You will have to get all of the desiel out of the tanks and line you can, and I think the torque convertor is different than a gas one. your accessories will be the biggest pain to mount. If you have all of the brackets for you engine, then your set. The deisel radiator should work without any problems. Like I say tho, the year of the truck will make some difference.

The tranny should be a Chevy pattern (the 5.7 diesel used the BOP pattern), but I've been told that the torque converter is different between gas and diesel transmissions. I'm using a 400 turbo from a 6.2 truck in my '77.

Re: Need help with Dually question

Yes, the diesel torque converter is actually a lower stall speed than a gas application used. Just swap the converter for a gas truck version.

I agree about the sending units too. Just get the tank clean and the lines blown out of old diesel and reuse it all. I did this swap about 15 years ago and that's what I did at the time.

The 6.2/6.5 engines used the same bell pattern as the sbc, and if I remember right, even the motor mounts will work.

Well, the pickup should work, but the sock will be different because diesel fuel is thicker- using the diesel sock will let all kinds of junk through it when used in a gas application. The reason I say to change the pickup is because I'm pretty sure the gas sock won't fit on the diesel pickup tube.

Re: Need help with Dually question

Ok I see , thanks Storm Chaser. Id still use the same setup because I prefer to have an inline filter just before the fuel pump anyway. Its easier than dropping the tanks. Just my opinion.

Im planning of going the other direction, from carb to FI. I think it'll be easier to take the bed off. Undo the fillers ( have to anyway), 8 bed bolts, one electrical plug and lift.

Re: Need help with Dually question

Normally that would be the easier way, but my truck is at my brother in law's house, in town with strict ordinances for 'disassembled vehicles.' His neighbor would call on us as soon as the bed left the truck. Plus, the bed is entirely full of parts, which would have to get piled in the yard. Unless I can find somewhere else to do it, I have to drop the tanks.
