Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
I installed the 88-98 Dodge Dakota weatherstrip on the passenger side of the cab - worked great - no issues, no binding - little tight - but the door closes correctly.
I then go to install it on the driver side - no dice. Door won't shut all the way - it will latch - but it look like it is ajar. I figured that the door needed to be aligned and after making that attempt I figured I would just use the LMC repop stuff that came with the truck since it was thinner (I thought)...I went and got the 3m black weatherstrip adhesive today and then installed the weatherstrip...PITA for one person. I then went to shut the door and it does the same thing - binds just before closing... ![]() I gave up for the day to eat dinner and get some stuff done in the house so I figured I would ask you all about what I need to do to get this door shutting like it should. I will heat the weatherstrip up tomorrow with a hair dryer to see if I can get it more pliable, but it will take some serious persuasion to get the door shut all the way (not sure if the hair dryer will do it). I can get pix tomorrow of what I am working with if that will help. Thx. |

Re: Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
I used the press on door weather strip from GMC Paul's, was a PITA to get the doors shut. Had to slam them for a while, didn't feel like adjusting the doors. Took months for them to break in, but they seal great. Bump for you.

How did you try to align it? If you didn't loosen the front hinge bolts and move it out a little you may have to do that. Just mark around the hinges with a Sharpie so you know where you're at. You should have at least two people and a floor jack to do this.

That Dodge weatherstripping is basically the same design as the original stuff....except its the push-on type.....No adhesive required....It seems the jury is till out on it though....some guys swear by it and others hate it....I recently went and picked up a couple different sets from my local pick a part just to check them out and they fit awesome and look great but they made it nearly impossible to close the doors....There are some tricks that some guys use (like heating them up) and it does take time to break them in but i'm not sold on it yet...JMO......I wish I could find a more plyable set that are the push-on type! Re: Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
The worst area for holding up the doors is at the bottom of the front of the vent window, right where the dash is. Moving the door back a hair and out a hair can sometimes alleviate this. Every set of seals I've ever put on my truck have always looked awkward and crushed funny after a few years of use in that area.

Re: Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
One tip someone told me about for new seals is to rub a little die-electric grease around the entire seal....just a light film....suppose to help keep em plyable and aid in closing and break-in????....Haven't tried it yet but I am just ready to install my new seals and I'll be giving it a shot!

Re: Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
I used S-10 door seals on my '70 and they work great. I will never go back to the glue on type. The doors were hard to shut for a long time, but worth it. They seal better and stay in place.

I used the 88-98 Chevy fullsized truck . Doors never shut right with them and they never broke in .

Re: Newer Weatherstrip - Door won't close...
I used the glue in type from Brothers. They fit well. The drivers side door is a little tight, closes well. The passenger side is tight also.
I had to adjust the striker plate slightly, and I have to push on the door a little when locking it, but overall they work well and the doors no longer rattle when I go over bumps. |
