TH400 Transmission GURU's Please help.
I have several questions My th400 was put together with the wrong yoke so it caused some problems.
#1. My first question is does this little copper ring that slides over the yoke supose to fit in the Transmission Tailhousing snug or loose?-Mine fit's loose What is stoping it from moving forward and falling deeper in the Tailhousing and bouncing around? #2. 2nd question Where can I buy a cheap non fancy Transmission Tailhousing if I need one? #3.Question 3 my input out put shaft( I hope thats what its called) looks all scratched up & worn because of the yoke being the wrong one Does it look like I need to replace it? #4. Question #4 Do I have the correct color speedometer gear for my transmission and rear end set up it seemed a little off when I drove it, I have a 12 bolt with 373's.? I just had a new drive line made with the correct fixed yoke and I am short on funds you can say I am broke so I am hopeing I can get away with just replacing the Transmission Tailhousing if I need to thanks Pablo....Here are some photos #5. Also what can I use to clean the inside out when I get ready to close it up can I use brake parts cleaner? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks guys............... ![]()

Its a press fit bushing. If its flopping around your tail shaft housing needs to be replaced., You can get one at a trans shop or junk yard. The shaft should be replaced at some point but It should be ok for awhile as long as your not romping on it. I don't know if the gear is correct

Re: TH400 Transmission GURU's Please help.
I agree, a replacement tailhousing is most likely going to be needed.
Looking at the pic of the output shaft (input shaft is the one on the converter side), it is seriously worn to the point it has a dip in the surface. It is way more then scratches. My guess is, if you put everything together, this area will cause some slop in the yoke as it moves and will eventually wear out the bushing/yoke. How long it would last, no idea? As for the speedo gear, you need to find out what you have currently (the orange gear) and find the chart that tells you what rear end ratio it is for. Keep in mind, if the tire size is not stock, you'll have to do the math to figure out which one you will need.

Re: TH400 Transmission GURU's Please help.
Great. Glad you got one to work.
Agree, to replace the shaft, you end up needing to disassemble the whole transmission.
