Power steering pump installation problems

I picked up orig type power steering pump and bracket and upon installing it I found that the rear diagonal bracket the shares the motor mount bolt does not line up correctly and forces the pump to far forward missalianing the pulleys .Does tha diagonal bracket somehow install under the motor mount on the block side or on top which is where I treid to install with great difficulty and or do I have the wrong brackets ?? Does anyone have any pics of the problem area Thanks Rob

It goes under the front motor mount bolt. But not under the mount itself.

Is there a shim that goes in between the block and the pump on the fwd two vertical holes. If so I guess I can make it work but shimming and grinding away the bracket at the motor mount section might help it into the location better so the bolt isnt binding also ligning up the the pully is paramount to my objectives but I realise these things we'rent rocket science when they where built either. I think I will take some pics of this other pump I have to get IDent .Thanks

nope, no shim. But the bracket that goes under the pump goes on top of the other bracket. could you have them backwards?

The only information I have to offer is that I kind of have the same issue, my pulleys mis-align just a tad on my '69. My setup is off a '72.

The Truck Shop lists two different sets of brackets, one is 63-70 and the other is 71-72 only. The pictures in their catalog definitely show differences in the brackets but I do not know if it causes the problems here.

Like you sudgest the alignment isnt that bad. But I think you might be right about the different p/n for the 71-72 era .It would be nice to examine that thought in more detail . guess I didn't say. But the pictures I sent are of my 72. So it sounds like your's should look pretty much like these. Pretty hard to get a good picture of them on the truck. Maybe somebody can shot you a picture of them off.

In this picture it shows your water pump pulley without a tentioner. Is this correct for 71 -72 ? Kinda tough to get belt on off ! unless this is an AC truck ???

It does have A/C. Not sure what you mean by the tentioner. If you mean the spring loaded ones like the newer models. they wasn't around back in the 70"s. But as far as correct. It's the same motor and set up that came from the factory. So guess it's correct for 72 anyway.

I was referring to the belt you cant see where it goes to .Looks like it goes around the waterpump and crack shaft but cant see where it goes from there cause its not in the picture but it must be going to the AC
Anyway now I have the waterpump off for replacement cause wrong type for alt bracket I'm running (orig equip)and need a new pulley for water pump . I guess it should be a doulble "V" Pulley .
Just change the water pump they say LOL I wanted it done anyway its a step closer to Collectors PLates .Just have to remove 4 inch lift and done but going to try with lift first But

You're right, the middle belt does go to the a/c. If yours has a/c and a single pulley on the water pump. what is running your a/c. As far as mine being correct, you can take that one to the bank. I ordered mine new, and I'm the only one who has ever wrenched on it. So it has had no POs. But I do feel for you guys who get these basket cases. Especially when the basket is 40 some years old. But the water pump pulley still don't explain why your having an issue with your p/s pump allignment. Does your crank pulley look like mine?

OK this is my cranckshaft pulley setup now. I removed the long shaft waterpump and replaced with short shaft because thats the one that came with the sbc as I understand it. After that I went to the steering pump and said holly **** batman.Not going to work cause pump is half a pully out (shim city here) .Then went to waterpump and holly **** Robin need to buy new pully to get me in about 2+ inches closer to the block .So I ordered a two groove short shaft pulley and here I is chatting up a storm with all you good peoples.37 Days left till xmas and I'm still spending on my truck when I should be shopping for the wife cause she letting me do all this .Anyway Thanks for your help .I'm having fun anyhow.

I see my crankshaft power steering position is a bigger pully than Yours as well or is it just the picture not showing it as such .I know I will have major trouble getting the steering pump to come out that far with out flipping over the pulley on the power steering pump .That would be my fist indication the the cankshaft pulley is wrong toooooooo .Does that sound reasonable to you seeing how I have had to change everything else .. LOL

Almost hate to tell you this. But, Looks like you have your pulley on backwards. Their shouldn't be that gap between your pulley and harmonic ballancer.

it's hard to tell from your picture. but is their some sort of adapter on that pulley or balancer? The balancer turns the pulley, so they have to be conected somehow. It should have three bolts going through the pulley into the balancer, And a big bolt into the end of the crank. But i've seen them without the big bolt. Do you know if it stll has the 350 in it? Almost looks like an old 327 balancer.

I pulled it off and turns out that it's just a deep pully .Likely a match to to other parts I removed (Water pump and alt brackets )that were not orig to this type truck. Just goiung to have a look see if I cant pick up a new pulley now that I know what I'm looking for ,Should be to difficullt Thanks again

I just double checked,,,,,,,,,,,you need the proper lower pulleys. Its a two piece pulley. Very rare Corvette option and I have two sets. One set already set aside with your name on it.

Thanks a bunch to Pumkin and Old Man Jimmy for your help on my power steering and Altenator, reconfigured back to restored condition. This was one of the last little projects left to complete for collector plates The pulley Pumpkin supplied me with was key and pics supplied from OLD MAN JIMMY were very much appreciated.
