52 5 window build

I am building this one with and for my 17 year old son, it will be a low budget build but should be fun. it will be on a S10 frame with the 4.3 V6 and bagged. it will either be patina or some sort of flat paint. the 52 was free and I bought two 96 S10's for $400 one with a good 4.3 and auto trans in working condition but a totaly beat up body (extended cab short box) the other a short box regular cab with a good body and locked up 4 cyl. I sold the short box bed for $200 so total cost so far is $200. here are a few pics of the 52 where it has been for many years.

for the price i can deal with it, this has been fun so far, bought 2 S10's for $400 and have parted out $400 worth of parts already so total cost in project is $0. and I have 52 5 window and a perfect running 4.3 auto donor S10

my son started taking the S10 apart, the body was trashed but after sitting for 3 years in a field it starts and runs perfect, I drove it around the block earlier.

Re: 52 5 window build

Hey there! just wanted to say..YOU COPIED! haha Im doing the exact same build with a 1996 S10.....found out a few things along the way about stripping down the S10 if you have any questions! I am just a little bit further along as far as tear down of the S10 so im about to move my old cab onto my S10 frame.....any questions you ever have you can post to this thread (since i subscribed to it) or send me a PM.....lookin forward to asking you a few questions too along the way since you and I are doing the same build with the same S10! I would love for you to update as much as you can and with LOTS of pics because they will help me out along the way a lot also! esp. pics of stuff like radiator placement, hood attatchment, body mounts, etc (the works)

Re: 52 5 window build

tonight I stripped the cab, removed the dash and stteering column and wire harness, carefully labeling all the wires. who knows how long before I go back with it. i am using the complete S10 harnes and instrument cluster. I was dissapointed to see th brake pedal support was welded to the firewall, actually only spot welded. we will see how this goes but I do have a plasma cutter, I may just cut out the section of firewall. so tomorow the cab comes off. sorry forgot to take pics

Re: 52 5 window build

I picked up a brake pedal mount from an older (1991) s10, they weren't welded on.

Re: 52 5 window build

I ran into that same thing 50adrod when i was taking mine down....i am torn between cutting that part of the firewall off and mounting it up (more than likely what i am going to do just so i can use the same pedal and booster) or getting an older assembly like Blue Jeep did.....i forgot to mention that whenever you start eliminating some of the wiring that i dont need and what i will for sure.......electrical things tend to keep me on edge haha

Lucky kid! I wish my dad was into cars when I was growing up. My brothers and I had to learn the hard way and read books, and screw stuff up- then beg friends of ours with dads who knew about cars to help us fix stuff. Great project! Cant wait to see more.

Oh yeah, roll with that patina, cause you cant buy a paint job like that!

Re: 52 5 window build

With out pics its hard to tell, but I would think with carefull cutting you could use the part of the firewall attached to the bracket to attach to the new firewall or as a bracket. Worst case is to drill out the spot welds, then weld and fill any places overdrilled on the bracket. That wouldn't take any longer than driving around finding a replacement.

Re: 52 5 window build

more progress today the body parts are all cut up and loaded on a trailer headed for the scrap yard, hope to get around $150 or so. I cut out the firewall section with the brake pedal mount and will decide later on how to mount it. I was a little dissapointed with the frame, it wil not be as easy as the earlier frames to shorten because it is boxed further, at least I got the later 4.3 though.

its home

well I was able to pick up the truck this weekend. she did not want to move from her resting place of 30 years, thank goodness I have a 10K winch on the trailer, it took everything it had to suck her out. here are a few pics. she also gave me the two other trucks if I want them, sadly the 41 chevy is beond repair, just too far gone. the other one looks like it may be Dodge 50ish and is in pretty good shape, might go back for that one.

the 41

the Dodge I think, any help to identify this is appreciated

about $6 worth for a start, the truck is not all that bad mainly the cab corners and the hood is shot but I have a extra hood that came with my 50
