Hi Don,
I took one of the NOS pieces that we were able to find with the yellow stripe to my local paint supplier and compared it to the samples in their chip books. I found a color called "Bahama Yellow" in their Dupont fleet color selector that's a very close match. I had some mixed in Nason Ful-Thane 2K urethane and the code # on the can is 7863IB. At least I think the first digit is a 7 ... it got printed partially off the edge of the label.

Thanks Ray!

Any other prep involved after you took off the black? Seems like there wouldn't be enough *tooth* there and/or it would need some sort of self etching base.

Airbrushed, or large gun to apply?

Re: Source for NOS side trim 1973-1980?????

Hi Don,

It appears as though the factory paint was applied directly onto the moldings without any primer. However, I too was concerned about the new paint sticking so I did a Google search on "painting anodized aluminum". On one site I found, they claimed the anodized finish is somewhat porous (on a microscopic level) and acts like a primer.

But just to be on the safe side, I carefully gave the areas to be painted a light sanding with 400 grit. I did the sanding after masking so I wouldn't accidentally scratch the unpainted areas. The anodized finish is actually quite hard and the sanding didn't dull it down quite as much as I would have expected. So far, it's seemed to work though. It's been a few years since I painted them and it hasn't peeled off yet.

I used a regular size spray gun with the fan pattern adjusted about as narrow as it would go.

Here's a pic I snapped that shows one of the re-painted pieces (on the bedside) up against one of the NOS yellow pieces (on the tailgate)

I think the Bahama Yellow is a tiny bit lighter/brighter than the original but it was the closest I could find.

Nope ... its all original GM trim. The majority of it was purchased from the local GM dealer back before it was discontinued (and the prices were still reasonable ) They only had the trim with the black stripe though so I had to re-paint it to make it correct for the 77. The tailgate pieces were discontinued so we had to get those NOS and were able to get them with the yellow stripe.

Thanks for the compliment Dennis!

Longshot379, I wouldn't be surprised if GM used an existing exterior truck color for the stripe on this trim. I didn't bother looking in the older chip books though because my local paint supplier doesn't seem to be very good at crossing some of those old truck code #'s over to modern paint formulas. They couldn't find an equivalent base/clear formula for the #25 "Mariner Blue" on this truck ... just an old acrylic enamel formula. We ended up having them scan the factory paint on the dash and inside of the cab to get a match.
