How-To: Remove markings from cluster lenses
I had asked a few times before of how to remove the numbers and markings on the instrument cluster lenses and a few tried to help but I was still unsure on how to "buff" the markings off.
It's fairly easy to just wipe the markings off a OLD lense but try it on a new one and your in for a suprize.... that stuff is TOUGH! Tonight I found a system that works very well for this so I thought I'd share with you guys too. You'll need: 2000 grit sandpaper (wet/dry) Water Polishing compound (black 3m) Plastic polishing compound white or yellow pad any type of polisher that can run at slow rpm (1k - 1.5k) - Start with cleaning the lense of all dust and debris. - Wet your sandpaper and lense and start lightly sanding the numbers off. - Clean the surface again with warm water - Apply a small amount of compound to the surface and start buffing the lense. Clean the lense with warm water and check your progress, you may need to repete this step a few times. - Apply a small amoun of polishing compound until you feel its as clear as it can be. - Clean the lense with warm water and wipe dry with a soft towel. If you notice scratches in your lense after buffing/cleaning you need to be more careful with the cleanup process. Now this lense doesn't look as good as it could. I could have spent more time polishing it and making the lense 100% clear but its a junk test lense only used to show how to do this. A new one that I did this on earlier looks fantastic!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Piston; 04-21-2003 at 11:14 PM. |
