Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
I have an '84 chevy k10 (4x4) with a 700r4 that is pretty much done. And not that it matters but its a 305 right now but i have the 350 im dropping in it already which is what the Sm465 would be going onto. Instead of spending money on something I dont want (an automatic transmission) I'd rather just swap it out for a manual (sm465) because to me if im going to be driving an old truck it only right for it to be a manual. I just have a few gaps im missing and after searching i know people have done this swap I just cant find exactly what i want.
List of what I know i need SM465 with bellhousing flywheel pilot bearing clutch pedal and linkage Now what i dont know is.. Will I need a different crossmember Im guessing a different transfer case depends on what spline mine is? Will I need a different (taller) transmission tunnel.. Thanks!! Will I need a different crossmember?
This depends on what t-case your gonna use. I have the same year truck, and did the same thing as you. I used a 205 from an 86 1 ton. IIRC the stock flat crossmember would work, but you need to lower the crossmember and raise the t-case. I think I used some bolts or something like that. Any type of spacer will work. I think I ended up using a c/m off an 80 3/4 that has a drop to one side to clear the t-case. Im guessing a different transfer case depends on what spline mine is? Depends what year tranny you are using. The early ones, pre 84 maybe? used 10 spline with a coupler sleeve. After 84/85, they went to a 32 spline male. You could swap the input to a 32 on your t-case, then would need an adapter. Or find a 205/adapter from an 85-91 1 ton, and never worry bout it again. Will I need a different (taller) transmission tunnel.. Nope, 4wd will have the tall tunnel, just cut a hole for the shifter, and start bangin' gears.

Wow. Thanks for that awesome reply. By any chance do you have pictures of your clutch linkage and how you rigged up the clutch pedal?

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
you will need to get the pedal hanger from a clutch truck, the entire hanger, witch means yanking the steering colomb down, the brake booster off and the same again for yours. you can make yours work but you will still have to pull it to do the work.

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
wait so you are saying to pull the pedal hanger i have to remove the steering column and brake booster. And that if i cant get a pedal hanger from a clutch truck then i could just modify mine to work

yes, but you will have to pull yours to be able to do the work in the first place.

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
Alright. I guess I didnt look very close. I found a modification right up that might just prevent this extra work. It looked pretty straight forward with drilling a hole and cutting a notch... I need to get the parts together first though. Thanks for the input.

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
I used a hydro setup, and did NOT remove the booster. Changing the column and pedals isn't that hard. Biggest pain I found was drilling the pushrod hole in the firewall in the right location. There is sorta dimple marks, but they didn't line up very well.

Which Washington are you from? Don't laugh I got that question a lot in the military. When you say you are from Washington many people assume DC not the state.

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
When I was in the military and told people I was from New York, they automatically assumed New York City. I tell them no, the state, then they say oh you mean upstate New York!! Well almost ALL of New York is upstate of the city!!!! some people....

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
I was just going to leave the auto column but pull the shifter off. I gotta tear my air tubing crap out before i can really tell whats going on up around the pedal mounts. I figured I'd just go with a mechanical (? linkage) clutch because it would be cheaper and easier to hook up maybe? I guess that depends if i find a donor truck with all the crap on it together.. I cant go forward much more until I can round up parts which will be after christmas
Im in the desert washington About NewYork my buddy visited up there and he said how it was ALL white cowboys or something like that. I was shocked because i was thinking of NYC which seems like is mainly black people... Just an idea for misconception |

Re: Transmission Swap; 700r4 to sm465
Desert is right. This time last year we had four feet of snow on the ground. Right now the ground is bare. No white Christmas for us this year
The reason I ask where in Washington is because my truck is an SM465/NP205 with Dana-44 front and 14-bolt rear and I am going to convert it to an automatic in the spring so my truck could be a pretty good donor vehicle for you. I assume you have 10-bolts front & rear and an NP208 transfer case. Am I right? You will probably need some conversion U-joints and if your truck is a short bed you will have to shorten the rear driveshaft but that is it. PM me and we can try to work something out if you are close enough.
