engine hoist
I've never used an engine hoist before and i wanted to know where to bolt it up to my 350 engine. i have the attachment with the horizontal tilt design if you know what that means.
Thanks! |

Re: engine hoist
Are you taking the engine out, or putting it back in? i suspect you're taking out, but i thought i'd ask to make sure----it will affect my answer.

I bolt a couple pieces of chain to the heads.

Re: engine hoist
You can also buy a lift plate that bolts in place of the carb on the intake manifold. They don't cost much.

I have always used the intake manifold bolts without any problem. Just take one out on each end and use longer bolts with washers. I would like to have one of the carb plates that unclewatts mentioned and I think it would work good with the adjuster. LockDoc

Re: engine hoist
I just have a length of chain with hooks at each end that I hook through the factory lift tabs which are placed diagonally on longer intake bolts, i.e. one tab on right front, one tab on left rear. I always hook the crane hook a link towards the back of the lifting chain so it lifts with a tilt to the back.
Just as important in pulling or installing an engine is where you are doing it. You need level concrete and enough room to maneuver the engine crane. You are going to have a lot of weight up in the air so be careful. Stay out from underneath it and a helper is always good. As soon as you clear the vehicle, lower it down as it is much safer to move with a lower center of gravity. Do you have an engine stand to bolt it on once removed? I suggest a 4 wheel one as opposed to a 3 wheel stand which is very tippy. Good luck and take it slow and easy.

Re: engine hoist
Which ever way you hook it up make sure that the bolts pull the tab or chain down against the block, heads or manifold. I've seen the sad results of a couple of engine lifting operations where the guy used long bolts and had way too much stress on the bolt causing it to snap. It's also a lot better to pull against the tension or length of the bolt rather then the shear of the bolt.

Re: engine hoist
For that type of attachment you can bolt the tabs to the heads like rick has shown or bolt them at the 4 corners of the intake. The tilt option is a great advantage.
