Re: 66 292 help
Point it just past the number 4 , when you slide it in it should be right

Re: 66 292 help
Number one should be TDC on the compression stroke. Take out #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole. You should feel air trying to escape from the hole as you rotate the engine in the correct direction. As the piston gets very close to TDC, like a few degrees before, the rotor should point to the tower on the distributor cap with #1 plug wire attached. That should get you close enough to get it running and use a timing light.

Re: 66 292 help
right now i have it pointing to number one piston... i know the piston is all the way tdc but no idea if its compression... i have my wife bump it but she hold the key too long lol ill just have to wait till tomorrow to get a buddy to help me with it...
"the rotor should point to the tower on the distributor cap with #1 plug wire attached". do you mean the rotor should be pointing towards number 1 on the cap if it was on...that is also pointing towards #1 cylinder am i right? |

Re: 66 292 help
Yes. You might even consider setting the cap on the distributor and drawing a line with a Sharpie on the base of the distributor that corresponds with #1 plug wire. That way when you take the cap off to watch the rotor, you'll still be able to tell when it lines up correctly.

Re: 66 292 help
could be pump or one of the 44 year old fuel lines you may as well change them now

Re: 66 292 help
ok i got it running but im needing to advance it some more and the vacuum is already hitting the block.... what i'm thinking is when i set TDC it was not all the way...is that possible? when i try to gas it it backfires thru the carb...is that a sign of not in time...it idles ok but i have to have half choke, i also got that reman...distributor and one of the threads is striped out so i have to remove it again and return it and get another one so my cap does not tighten down well...could that also be a problem? any info will be helpful thanks..

Re: 66 292 help
I missed the part where you have to get a different distributor . it should be the same basic proceedure. where you turn the distributor so that no.1 on the cap is almost straight ahead . by rotating the engine CCW until the rotor points to the no.1 position on the cap you locate the oil pump drive so that the distributor will slide in where you want it . carefully pull the distributor out noting how much the rotor turns towards the no 4 position on the cap. probbably 1/2 way between 4 and 1 . now with the distributor out turn the engine CW to about 9 degrees or 5 if you are a low altitude. when you get your replacement dist. point the rotor the same as it was on the one you took out (should be between 4 and 1 cap position . drop it in hook it up and it should be within a couple of degrees.
Is this a little clearer
