front axel disc conversion.

Hey fellas! Has anyone ever take a drum front axel and convert it to a disc brake? I have a 69 drum front axel and would like to convert it to disc. I don't know if im looking in the wrong places for this on web sites or what but I cant seem to find anything. I'm trying to stay away from buying a 71-72 axel....

I have the same basic question too. I plan on trying to take the disc setup off a 72 dana 44 and put them on a 70 dana 44. Doth are open knuckle but not sure if the spindle on the 70 will accept the 72 disc setup or if the spindle would have to be swapped out too.

If memory serves me correct, 115-K10 you can do this w/ enough work, & 6768, your SOL.

either way, both of you would be hours and busted knuckles ahead to just swap in a disk-brake axle

Why not just swap out the entire front axle from a 71/72 and be done with it? I'm sure if you could find one with the same gearing you could have an easier time than swapping theparts individually.

That being said, I have a line on a 71 front disc axle, but not sure on the price. I'm about 2 hrs from both of you.

6768chevylover, Sorry for hijacking your thread.

I actually have a complete 72 axel setup but there is fairly deep rust pitting in the tubes or I would just throw that on. I am basically trying to make one good axel setup out of two of them. I will probably have bloody stumps for hands by the time i get those froze up drums off.

After doing some research I think the caliper backing plates will fit the drum knuckle. Not sure if the axels need to be swapped too.

JimmyFloyd, thanks for the offer on the axel but I am going to give the drum/disc swap thing a shot since I have all the parts (I hope). Perhaps 6768chevylover will take you up on it.

As long as it is an open knuckle diff, everything will transfer over, even later corporate parts. The only thing you need to watch out on is make sure you match up axle shafts with carrier and hubs, since there is a difference is spline counts and shaft thicknesses depending on year.
