If you are referring to the entire metal dash assembly of a 60-66 Chevy truck then I would say yes pull the windshield so you can visualize the spot welts that hold the dash to the firewall.

The windshield definately has to come out first to remove the dash. There are about a million spot welds that hold the dash to the windshield channel. There are also a couple (3 I think?) of bolts on each side of the dash, it's also welded on the sides. It's a pretty big operation to do it right so as not to screw up the dash or the truck cab.

I took one out of a '63 and ended up cutting the windshield panel and all. I was junking the cab (the roof was smashed) so it didn't matter how much extra I took to get the dash out easily.

Either has three bolts and there are approximately 40 spot-welds along the lower windshield lip, that must be removed in order to remove the steel dash assembly. They are not welded on the ends, just the spot-welds along the windshield lip.

As the others mentioned, it is quite the undertaking. It took me two weekends to cut one out of a stripped '63 cab...the whole time fighting the urge to take a plasma cutter to it.

We have pulled several from parted cabs...it takes about 30 minutes with a Uni-Bit or spot-weld cutter in a 18v DeWalt drill. I also use a seam seperator to finish off the spot-welds, that are being stubborn.

guess I'll be sanding and painting IN-PLACE, lol.
ain't gonna be a resto...just a daily runner. guess I should take some pics.
got a 60 4x4 short step. replacing the drive train with a set from an 80. That'll give me ps,pb and automatic. so far ive got the floorboards replaced and the crossmembers swapped from the 80 to the 60....goes from a front mount to typical side mounts. box is in pieces and my leafs are at the shop gettin re-arced...got a steering column from a 77 van and installed the 60 wheel on it.
a buddy gave a new edelbrock 660 and manifold for it too.
