Blue Engines vs Orange ones

I noticed my Bell Housing is Blue, my 250six is Orange.
I am quite sure the P.O. scabbed out a 283 or maybe
a 292 and stuck in a nice running 250. No big deal but
I just wondered were the American Engines all painted
Blue, or were some Orange? Were all the Canadian
Bow tie engines Orange until the eighties when I
think GM changed them to Blue. I'll
probably paint the engine Orange again because
that's what I grew up with, more of a curiousity thing

Re: Blue Engines vs Orange ones

Oh....so teal color was 292. My Bell housing is a
teal colour, maybe not blue. All small 6's (230,250)
were Orange in USA? Never seen a 283 other than
orange but never had a truck before. So I should
paint my engine Orange, I like Orange

Re: Blue Engines vs Orange ones

230 and 250 engines were painted blue from the factory.283's were gray,327's were green.no trucks in the 60-66 era were painted orange that i know of.if it is orange it has been repainted or replaced the engine.i am talking about chevy's.you would have to ask a gmc expert on those trucks.

solid answer, thanks.

I got a real soft spot for Orange as you can see on my 72 H1 500 triple
Crotch Rocket. Picture is kinda red but she's factory colour, screaming
Orange. In the day guy's would run hi 12's all day, stock record
was 12.65@122 in the quarter. Fast as hell but I stick to Burnouts
and Catwalks. I did pound my good friends fresh broke in 850 Commando
into the ground, full moon on Watt's Pond Road. Jerry's a good sport.
When he realized he was licked in 50 feet, just for a joke he gave up, when I looked back he was going the other
way. he was surprized as I told him I was going to win

It's Famous Now,!!

Re: Blue Engines vs Orange ones

Shows us a picture of the engine, right side, and we can tell you if its a 230 or 292. Makes a big difference in original color.Collins10672 has got it right. For such an original truck, I would go with an original engine color. The blueish green 230-250 color is not availabe to my knowledge, but the '77 and up GM blue is close, but not the exact shade. The 292 and 327 is not blueish green, it is all green color, similar to Ford Green which is available in engine paints. The 283 was a machinery gray color. From '67 up to '76, all chevy truck engines were painted the familiar orange-red color.

Re: Blue Engines vs Orange ones

Seems everyone missed your question TwoFiftyShifter, including myself on that thread. GMC is a different animal when it comes to paint. GMC engines both V6 and inline 6's were painted a reddish orange color. See ad on ebay#300398454593. It shows the body lifted from frame. Frame items colors were altered to show suspension features, but engine color is correct.

Re: Blue Engines vs Orange ones

I am 100% sure it's not a 292. I ran the casting number
last week and it says it could be either a 230 or a 250
from Chevrolet or Oldsmobile. (REMEMBER USA truck and
a CANADIAN ORANGE non-original engine) This number
showed this casting ran from like 64-73, prolly only in
Canada too. Chev didn't paint any car engines in
Canada blue, green or grey. They were all Orange as
were Pontiac into the 70's. I had a 62-63-67-68 chev. the
2-3 were Original 6's Orange, the 7 and 8 (283)were orange too.
Had a 67 Pontiac all stock Orange 283 engine.

Now trucks, I don't know for sure at all.
I have never had much to do with trucks till now. Anyway
I think it's too late as I painted the Bellhousing and it's
back on with new clutch, tranny installed. The Six in
it was Orange so I'll have to please these Canadian Chev
"GURU's" I hang with and paint it Orange.

My front drive shaft is foobarred, someone drove it with a
stuck hanger bearing and it chewed the area the hanger
bearing fits to, may as well fix it now as my diff will be
at least 10 more sleeps, and hello Chevmas morning. I
should be able to do my first drive, with brakes
