Converting 3 speed to 700r4
I'm picking up a 1967 with an inline 6/3 speed column shift. I want to install a 700r4 from a donor 1989 suburban. Will the trans mount behind the 6 cylinder? Other than the shifter what all will I be looking at changing? Any advice will be greatly helpful. Thanks.

Re: Converting 3 speed to 700r4
My 6 cylinder came with a powerglide so I would think the 700r4 would find the 6 cylinder w/o too much fuss.
Not sure about the cross member but I am sure others here might help you with that and other things that you'll need to complete the installation. Good luck.

Re: Converting 3 speed to 700r4
Can you replace just the shifter or does the whole column have to be switched? I'm asking because I'll be swapping out my 3spd man to a th350.

Re: Converting 3 speed to 700r4
are there engine/trans mounts on the bellhousing? If there are you will need a different trans crossmember, and will also have to remove the crossmember that holds the mounts to the bellhousing. This crossmember is riveted in. New steering column, or a floor mounted shifter, you will need a transmission cooler, or a new radiator, cooler lines, TV cable, and a way to connect it to the carb. wiring from the transmission, that goes thru the brake light switch, or to a manual toggle switch to LOCK UP the converter at cruise. This does need to be done to keep the transmission from running hot at 45-50 + mph. Other than that I think you are ready to go!
when I went from TOT to 700r4, I replaced the column, installed cooler lines, and a new radiator. I have the transmission wired thru the brake light switch, and also have a manual toggle switch to over ride the lock up at slow speeds 35-45 mph. Last edited by cparman; 02-26-2010 at 06:51 PM.
