you are right the inside of the " C & O " are all black on the inside and so is the " S ".
I could not get a pic to come out, to dark.
Look at the bottom, the " S " is all black and also the middle leg of the " M "

cool, thanks for checking it out. Mine are the same way, I guess it must have had to do with how they wanted people to see it at different angles? Also, the black doesn't start on the 'U' until about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way down the legs.
Is the black on the NOS set gloss or satin?
