What's better Air Induction: Open Element or Stock with a Duct? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, I have both an open element Chrome Air Cleaner, as well as the stock one. BUT, my stock one has been modified. I cut off that little plate that's on the inside of the round portion (I guess it's called a "air director", Swervin did the same mod), as well as cut out the guts for the Heat Choke Stove valve. Here's a pic with the current 3" Cold-Air duct.

Would that work better than just a normal open element cleaner, or would it work worse? I'm using a K&N Filter (fits both stock and open element)

You have all kinds of stuff going on there!
I like the battery hold down

You would probly get slightly more air flow out of the open element, but it would be warmer air. I would stick with stock, but get a stock snorkel. They are cheap at your local dealer (brand new).
If I remember correctly I paid like $7-8 for a brand new snorkel.
I know for sure I did not pay over $12 for it.

Why? You don't like my snorkel? It's a 3" tube with an adapter, I think it's MUCH better than stock. But what do you mean I have a lot going on there? LoL, the battery hold down has been there as long as I can remember, hey, IT WORKS!

Ever been in a crash with that truck? Probably not because you wouldn't use that string to hold the battery down. 'Tis just a friendly suggestion.

Rock, my first 82 had the very same type of battery hold down, and i did crash it. battery never moved.

In my old 76 I had my battery tied down with bungees. I was bouncing around a little in a mud hole and the battery crashed into the fan. Neither the battery nor the fan did very well.
Getting cheap tie downs that BOLT in place is a good idea. What I used cost about $10 and can be found at most auto stores - just the two long bolts with wing nuts and a cross bar.

Just givin you a hard time about the battery hold down and the air intake. No biggie

I just think the stock snorkels give a nice clean appearance.
They are black and dont attrack as much attention, thats all.

EDIT:
Speaking of crashes. A friend of mine had a similar hold down.
Hes a jack@$$ and decided that driving off road around the dirt field by the mall would be a blast. Which it was

. Anyway his battery came loose some how and jumped into the fan. It was an optima battery. It destroyed one cell and the thing still worked fine, but didnt crank as well. One more reason to own an optima!

The closed system with cold air intake will work much better. If you want more air then put another snorkle on the drivers side and add a tall air filter lid from a early to mid 80's chevy pickup and use a tall filter (twice the height of the standard filter). I put a taller filter lid and element in my 91 sububuran and the filter stays cleaner longer and costs exactly the same amount as the standard height filter.

Nothing looks cooler then opening up the hood of a truck and seeing a massive, chrome, open element, filter under there. And nothing sounds cooler then an open element when the quad opens up and starts howling.

However, the cold air induction is better. Traveling down the highway you are getting a ram air effect plus you are not sucking in that hot engine bay air. Hence why muscle cars use the ram air hoods, the cowel induction, etc, etc.
