Years ago I had young in-laws that thought it was fun to put a pebble in a hubcap, and when the aunt or uncle would complain about the random clicking sound, they would miraculously fix the problem and receive a $10 gift for the effort! A rock (or nail) stuck in a tire tread can also create a distinctive clicking sound especially with the windows rolled down, and particularly if it's a driver side tire.

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

I have had lug nuts shear off, and then float around in the hubcap.. after 2 sheared, I put a different hub and drum on!!

your only moving parts are the 2 front drum/hubs, the engine, the clutch, or the tranny.
you should be able to trouble shoot it fairly easy..
check for a battery cable in the fan, or a broken motor mount that allows the engine to move under power and makes the fan touch something.

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

not really on topic but we put some shrimp in my buddies chevette hubcaps in high school...took him awhile to figure out why his car stank. The pebble in the wheel made me think of it...

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

on a serious note... you just recently had your wheel come off going down the road right? Did you replace the front drum? When mine did that it landed on the brake drum and put a slight flat spot in it.... I drove it home but it scrubbed/clicked with every rotation of the wheel...just a thought

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

If you have friends that like to practical jokes, check the driveshaft for a long zip tie. It makes a really cool clicking noise....... or so i'm told On a serious not though, pull the dust caps and check the cotter pin and see if it rubbing. Also check the inside of the front wheel that dropped. You may have bent a steering component and it's rubing on the wheel, or wheel weight.

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

If you havent found it already and still think its in the driveline all ya got to do to find it is block the front wheels so it CANT MOVE forward or back, then jack up the rear so both wheels are off the ground and make shure its secure, maby on 2 good jack stands on the axle. Start it up and put it in gear, best to have a buddy stay in the truck just in case .

Now you are free to look aroud from outside the truck and listen to where the click is comming from. If you dont hear it the click is prolly in the front wheels someplace.

Re: help with clicking on a 61 frontend

I had a manual trans go out on me. It had a ticking noise too. I learned what the problem was pretty quick afterwards. Just kind of thing out loud here. Did you jiggle the water pump? I know you said it's only when its rolling. Maybe its at higher rpms. I'd also check the fuel pump.
