1982 3rd Member
Hello,
I have a 1982 Chevy 4x4. Just lost the rear end while casually driving on a rural road. Would someone be so kind to tell me how I identify the gear ratio? I have pulled the rear cap and drained the oil. My initial plans are to replace the rear end with one from the salvage yard. Some years back I replaced practically all body panels, engine and fresh paint. She's a keeper but current funds do not permit a new 3rd member. Any help will be much appreciated. |

You need to rotate the rear tires so you can see the ring, and stamped on the ring will be a number....
The number on the ring is almost unreadable, but the numbers will be on it similar to this. for example this one says "15 41" The gear ratio is 2.73 Hope it helps.

I forgot to add:
take the 41 and divide by 15. it comes out to 2.73333333333333333333333
