NV4500 swap in a 76 K10

I've got a 76 K10 that currently has a 350 w/ an SM465 and an NP205 10 spline transfer case w/ the 8 bolt pattern. I am wanting to put a NV4500 in place of the SM465 and keep the 205 t-case, and i already know that i need an adapter plate to pair up the nv4500 and the np205, but what im not sure about is if i can use the stock bellhousing from the nv4500 on my 76 350, or if i will have to get the aftermarket bellhousing for the nv4500 to bolt up to 86 and earlier small block chevys? If anybody has any info about this would appreciate the input.

Re: NV4500 swap in a 76 K10

Cant use the 465 bell on any 4500. You will need the bell that goes with that tranny. Also don't need an adapter, just need to open up 2 of the holes and notch the tranny side of the flange to clear the shift rail on the 205...

Ok. What about adapting the output shaft of the 4500 to the 10 spline on the 205?

Swap the input shaft of the transfercase to a 32 spline gear. That will mate to your output shaft on the trans and will be a stouter set up too, eliminates the coupler.

Re: NV4500 swap in a 76 K10

i forgot, you will need to machine the housing at the input bearing to accept the larger input bearing that goes with the 32 spline gear. If the machining and parts chasing gets to be too much look for a late 80's - '92 NP205 with the round pattern 6 bolt pattern, this will have the larger input bearing already installed. This will also let you mount the tc directly to the tail of the trans eliminating the adapter too.

Bellhousing: do you want to run your mechanical clutch linkage or convert to hydraulic? AA sells a custom bellhousing that allows you to use your existing mechanical, or you can use the bellhousing that would come with the NV4500 and switch to a hydraulic setup. -steve

Re: NV4500 swap in a 76 K10

Well I am wanting to switch to a hydrualic clutch so I will have no issues using the 4500 bellhousing. And thanks for the info about the t cases. I will consider just getting a different 205

Re: NV4500 swap in a 76 K10

I have the round pattern 205, but shipping might be a deal breaker.

I don't think it's hard to open the case for the bigger bearing, or to get the retainer or input itself.

Are the 6 bolt 205's still gear driven?

yup! look for them behind TH400s from '89-'92. might have been in them a couple years earlier than '89, i forget.

Dont forget the square body styles were dropped after 1987 in the half tons series. You are looking for the 1 tons which remained until '92 in the solid axle square body style. -steve

When I done the same swap with the same parts mentioned here, the inside shift rail will hit the stock 4500 tailhousing. They will need to be spaced 2.5" apart to get enough room for the inner rail to travel full distance out. This leaves 3 options. (1)buy the AA tail housing for this application and clearence issues will be avoided. (2) Grind the stock tailhousing out for clearence. If option 2 is used, the factory TH may be weakened a bit with the loss of material and leakage could develop in this spot. (3) Have a custom spacer machined like I did to mate the 2 together. The 205 I used came out of an '87 1 ton from behind an SM465. It has the long 32 spline input that will mate up slick as a whistle.
