HELP! Need Advice! 86 K20 Changing Axle Shaft

Hey Guys,

I have a K20 w/ a 10 Bolt front axle. While I was plowing snow recently the driver side U-Joint gave out and the yokes of both the inner axle and outer stub shaft tore themselves to shreds. I have been trying to get the axle out, but I'm having trouble getting the knuckle off. I have removed the tie rod, the drag link, and I got the upper ball joint nut off, but I can't quite figure out how to free up the lower ball joint nut (remains of yokes in the way), then how do I press it out with the remains of the axle yokes in the way? Anyone have pics of this procedure?

Any advice would be appreciated. And yes....I know...take better care of my U-Joints in the future.

Re: HELP! Need Advice! 86 K20 Changing Axle Shaft

If you take your brakes off and rotor off there should be a set of bolts holding the spindel to the knuckel. Take them out. Then take the spindle off then you can remove the inner shaft if not you have to remove the front cover and take the c clip off the shaft. then you can get to the nut. Also if you go to autozone.com they have a online repair guide with pretty good pic.

Thanks. I took the C-Clip and WARN hub cover off (as well as the caliper), but it looked like the rotor was a single unit w/ the spindle knuckle assembly. Maybe I just need to give the rotor a couple of taps with a hammer to jar it lose then?

There should be a nut of some kind in there. You may or maynot need a fancy socket to get the nut off. But if you have the bearings out the hub/rotor should slide off with minor effert. Autozone.com has a diagram of all the crap in the hub. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/rep...00c1528004c663

Pal, wish I was closer to you, I've done hundreds of front axels over the years. I'm not sure if I could walk you thru this without missing something because I'm so used to them. You can call me if you wish and I'll do my best. My number is 518-581-1622. If you want I'll call you, I have the unlimited cable phone thing with roadrunner. My e-mail is "jmcclur2@nycap.rr.com" if you don't want to post your number here. Jim

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
