Homebuilt headers
I just wanted to show you guys my headers that I am building for my 67. You all know we dont have any good choices in headers without paying a fortune.
These were built from 2.25 316SS tubing. custom 316SS 3/8 flanges, cone engineering 316SS collectors with turbo stars. I used SS v-band flanges for a leak free seal to the exhaust pipes. I still have to grind down the welds and send them to Poly-Dyne down the street for Ceramic Coating. I have about 350.00 in materials. Took me about 10 hours to mock up and weld. Tell me what ya think.....

I built my own because not one header company was willing to make the "correct" flanges for the PRO1 style square exhaust port. I had my buddy waterjet me a set of perfect flanges and the matching copper gaskets for them.
I went with fenderwell type headers for the sake of the starter and I have a GEN V block with the built in driverside oil cooling that I am utilizing.

You have WAY more time, patients (and skill) than I do. I tried to make my headers (inside the frame) and promptly decided it was just more than I was willing to deal with. Took me a week to build 2 tubes!! (and I have a pile of scrap pieces to prove it!!!!). I was targeting 42" to 46" lengths, and staying inside the frame, not dissecting my aluminum inner fender panels, and have the slip collector supported at the trans cross member. (I AM my own worst enemy for SURE).
You have my sincerest appreciation for your work there,, KUDOS to you!!!

Those are bad man I have tossed around the idea of doing that with my 65 sbc but I dont have patients to build them. Cant wait for sound clip.

Now you need to send those to a tubing bender and then you can start selling a few.
Nice work. I was thinking of making my own headers for my turbo setup, but don't really have the patients I would have been in the same boat as Marv. I did build my hot side and that was a bit more then I wanted to do.

I like the fit from what i can see. I was able to get my 2" hooker super comps to fit quite well. I did however lower and set my engine back aways,which now makes the drivers side closer to the frame underneath at the back,I also plassed my rails alittle for clearance. I keep hearing that i should have bigger pipes on this. I noticed you where not able to make equal length tubes ? look like you made a nice exhaust good fabing.

Thanks Everybody. The headers really weren't that bad to make. I really liked them tonight. since my NEW Protorque CVR starter already took a CRAP. Didn't have to worry about them being in the way. The Bullets sound NASTY BTW, What I heard of them before the starter crapped the bed.

Nice work. I see you used Dynomax bends. I am building an exhaust system for one of my project cars with Dynomax mild steel bends and am having a slight issue with inconsistent pipe size. It seems when I cut a bend somewhere in the middle and then join it to a straight piece of pipe cut from the same bend, the diameter of the pipe doesn't line up just right. The bend is always smaller diameter than the straight piece. And here I though a mandrel bent pipe kept the same diameter throughout... but apparantly it does not. Makes it a pain to weld the pieces together without a step on the inside. Did you see the same thing on yours?
Also I noticed you are in Houston (me too) and were going to have your headers coated at Poly-Dyne. But in your post of the finished headers they are wrapped with tape. Did you do both, or just decided to wrap instead of coat? I have used Poly-Dyne to coat exhaust parts in the past and they did an excellent job, but they would not use the shiney ceramic coating. I ended up using what they called Titanium color.

I agree you could sell a pile of them to us guys who can't get the exhaust out because were to low...we could easily exit in front of the rear wheel instead of dumping them infront of the axle......an I AGREE on the wrap I'm going to do mine when I have the exhaust built for the caddy
