I've decided to build a 496 for my shortwide and im sure the factory suspension will NOT hold the power.. it doesnt really hold the power from the 355 lol.

Yea, a 496 is what i'm planning to build as well... it's a while coming still... gotta but the heads, then I gotta buddy at a speed shop gonna help me assemble it all.

Definately gonna be fun, but yea, at first I plan to run the caltrac's on my pickup, will definately be a test to see how well they work

Yeah, my uncle has the hookup on stroker kits, im getting eagle crank and rods, je pistons balanced for $800 so i HAVE to go that route cause it's so cheap lol. I'm buying brodix race rite ovals 270cc. victor jr, unknown hydo roller, holley 1050 dominator, msd 6al2, im gonna run the morel type lifters for sure and prolly do a lunati cam or have a custom ground cam. It's definately gonna come alive lol. BUT I GOTTA GET OUTTA THIS SH*T HOLE COUNTRY FIRST. I come home in around 80 days then it's on like donkey kong lol.

I look forward to seeing yours going, sounds real close to what i'm gonna build, I'm using AFR's 305 head though, and a comp Hyd Roller. It definately should liven up the old stock big block it's replacing heh.

I've seen good numbers from 496's with the 305's from AFR. I'm using the RR's simply because people think "they don't flow well." People base off of flow numbers to much now. There is alot more important things to heads other than flow numbers. I'll let you know how the build goes ^^. I'm hoping for around 650hp but who knows. Maybe i can get into the 7's (1/8 mile) If not.. there is always the juice

I had good luck with mine . The instuctions give you a starting point with preload settings , but if you have better track you can run some gap . I set mine up with about 7 different settings . I didn't use the bottom hole as it is better suited for poor track conditions . With the bar in the top hole my settings would go from the factory preload ( not so good track ) to flush with the leaf (better track ) to gapping with a dime or nickle depending on what the track will take . The bigger the gap the harder it "hits the tire" .

Cal tracs are nothing like traction bars and really need their split leaf springs.


I made a pass with a buddies girlfriend in the orange 67 camaro last night. I went 1.61 60 on motor with a 275 60 15 mickey t radial and my buddy went 1.42 with the bottle and no passenger.

mine are similar, they will run from the axle housing to a crossmember or from the ubolt plate to the frame. i might make a post today about them.

I was told that they did make the split leaf setup for our trucks. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard for them to make some if needed. That's what I want for my truck next.

Here are a couple pics I saved of a members truck that is running Caltracs. I neglected to save his user name though.

So apparently they make them that will work on a pickup.

Im sorry if i wasnt clear. Last time i called cal-tracs, They didnt make a split mono leafspring for pick up trucks. my 73 wanted the light 3 leaf pack and both shocks pointed forward

Are those homemade shock brackets you have bolted to the caltracs? If so, that's what I need to do. I was planning to have my shocks mounted behind the axle and vertical, but I may see if I can try that forward tilt like yours.

Ya just angle iron bolted to the u/bolts, got the shocks back to a decent angle too.. A complete accident. But either forward or backward as long as there the same direction.
