coil and connections on '73

can't get any spark, so I figured I'd grab a coil from another rig. upon removal, I noticed a difference in the two. donor was a metal housing painted black. the one in my truck seems to be ceramic and reads "USE ONLY WITH EXTERNAL RESISTOR". Is there something special about his particular coil? both rigs are 1973 GM 1/2 ton 454 big blocks. my truck seems to have extra stuff on it

2nd photo, what is that? resistor? what does it do? top side goes into harness into god-knows-where. bottom side goes to postive side of coil.

3rd photo, what is that item attached to the coil clamp? what does it do? it connects to positive side of coil as well. thanks in advance

what may have caused this kind of wear on the coil?

Re: coil and connections on '73

Photo 2 is the resistor, It reduces voltage to the coil to keep the points from burning up too soon. The other wire goes to the ignition switch.

The coil wore on the bottom because the small screw in the clamp holder was left loose, You see the screw head in the bottom of the hold down ? Raise the coil up off this screw head then tighten the small screw on the side of the holder.

The third photo is a condenser, Most likely to reduce ignition noise in the radio/sound system.

Re: coil and connections on '73

I have an opportunity to buy a used HEI distributor for $20.
1. will a small block HEI unit fit on my '73 454bigblock?
2. should I convert to HEI?
3 should I try and find all new parts for the points style setup that i currently have? (coil, resistor, condensor)

any opinions are appreciated

Re: coil and connections on '73

the stuff for points will be alot cheper but HEI is far less aggrevating.get that HEI for 20 bucks as long as its intact with all parts, moves freely and is useable i say go for it.you should convert over.a small block one should fit as long as the end of the distributor sits in the slot of the oil pump drive your good its what drives the distributor.as far as from points to HEI i think its pretty much plug and play except for finding a source for a power wire.i could be wrong on the last one thats what my uncle who knows alot about cars told me once back in the day when he did that for someone else's chevy it was a 74 i think
