Changing rod link shift to cable shift on column
Has anyone ever made an attempt to swap their shift linkage to cable linkage like the newer vehicles come with.
Well I just got through converting my 65 GMC from rod linkage to cable linkage and let me tell you it works great. I'll try posting pics later. |

Yes, very interested!! I was comtemplating buying the kit from Lokar, I never even thought of using what the new vehicles use.

OK,some pics of the install.Hope you can make something out of them.What I used were the cable and trans link bracket and trans cable bracket from a 98 S10 Blazer.The column link bracket and column clamp I fabricated.

Very Nice! I used the Lokar kit for mine, had it installed for over two years now. I had to modify the set up as it was for a 67 and up application - after installation my shifter operated bacwards (park was first, reverse was second etc..). After I figured out a solution, man what a difference - precise gear selection every time with no hang ups!
That being said, I sure wish I had thought of or seen a cable set up off of a newer truck, there's nothing like factory parts for ease of maintenance and replacement parts. Great job!

One thing I do have to admit is that the shift arch is not wide enough as I can only get it to drive gear,I will have to redo that column link and increase arch angle to give it more swing to be able to get into 1st & 2nd gear.But for now it works great,and yes for the gears it does hit,it is dead on.What a difference. |
