Hi everyone.
I'm David Goostree and I just bought a 1970 C10 pick-up. She's a beauty, 350 engine w/ a granny 4 speed. Original green that's repainted except for the tailgate, the body shows no signs of rust or bondo. Somebody put a mild cam in it, and an Edelbrock? double pumper. Sorta plain, P/S only but a nice sound system. I bought new tires for it Monday, Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor. It has deep dish chrome 15" wheels w/ baby moons and darker green flames painted on the front. There are a few issues. The floor mat is trash but JC Whitney sold me a new custom fit full front rubber mat. The turn signals go nuts when braking or w/ lights on, and there's a stripped bolt in the P/S mount. The seller had dual straight pipes so Midas put on some glass packs for me. I haven't used the radio yet, I prefer the 350 sound system. After putting those 75 series profile tires on it to replace the 60 profile, I noticed it's almost scary on the highway on a windy day. Oh, I'm having a dickens of a time finding a 15" rim for a spare that's 7" to 8" wide. Also need some sort of a spare tire mount for the bed, all I have is the 1 bolt. Howdy Hounddogs and Doug.
I was thinking today I need to get some pictures of it. I'll post some very very soon. I didn't mention earlier that it is a long bed fleetside, and it has a tach, some kind of special headers and an A/C accel thing mounted on top of the distributor. The seller said it was used for 1/4 mile drags by the guy he bought it from last year. I'd think it must have had a different tranny because that granny 4 speed is slow to shift. It might be a lot better after I adjust the clutch, it barely disengages and tries to creep forward at an idle even with the clutch all the way to the floor. I thought I was pretty good with a wrench during the 60's and 70's, but working ungodly hours for the last 30 years at a Goodyear building Earthmover tires and driving newer boring vehicles has made me a bit rusty. I never had time to tinker and was on 6 day work weeks the entire time. Now I have time to play. The exhaust on this truck stirs something in my soul. Technical question ... shouldn't I be able to tap out the stripped mounting bolt on the P/S pump and put an insert in it instead of having to replace the entire pump??? David |

I've been an admirer of the Chevy pick-ups as long as I can remember. I recently took an early retirement and had just enough money to buy an inexpensive truck so I could haul supplies and make trips to the dump. I searched for several weeks. I was kinda hoping to find around a 50 model, but the 70 model was close by and only $3800. It had straight pipes on it and looked beautiful. I got so excited that I forgot to test drive it. Now I have a total of $5K in it, and that includes the new glass packs, the floor mat and new Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires. I put 265/75R15's on the back and 235/75R15's on the front. My thinking was I needed better traction and durability for driving on back roads. With the 275/60r15's it came with I got stuck in my field on level ground. The higher aspect ratio of the 75 series tires precluded putting 265's on the front. The new tires are 2 days old and now I see people running 20's, so I'm thinking I might have been a bit hasty. Hah! Those tall sidewalls really make it move around on the highway. Say ... you wouldn't happen to be my buddy Jeff from Goodyear would you? Welcome aboard David. I spent about 3 summers working as summer relief up at the plant while I went to college. I worked over in radial NG line my first summer and 2 summers over in Earthmoving. I know a few of the guys out there in the earthmoving area. Congrats on early retirement and of your truck. Trevor

I've been told my deep dish rims will ruin my wheel bearings every 2 to 3 thousand miles, but it came like that, so I'll find out the same way I learn everything else. Worst case scenario ... I'll get really good at changing wheel bearings. Hah! I was also told that the law will be after me for the dark tint on the windows. We'll see, I'm not going to start turning it into something else just because of someone else's opinion. I kinda like the tinted windows. The new glass packs didn't quiet it down much, but it sure sounds sweet. It's not like that's a moving violation. It's funny ... I've only ran 2 tanks of gas through it, and people are telling me all sorts of things I simply MUST change. I'm thinking any changes I make will be strictly for my own satisfaction. If it ever needs a repaint, I'm a sucker for red and cream. I bought an Austin Mini for commuting to work 6 years ago and it needed nothing, but 6 years later, it was drastically different. David |

Am I correct in thinking you have a 52 Chevy? Every time we see one of those old trucks, my Wife tells me, "That's a truck like my grandpa had!" I've always loved those bodies. I actually had a 50 model around 1975, I wish I'd kept it. David |

Yes,I have a 52 Chevy(at least some of it).This is going to be my first build and I have a long road ahead.Starting with a cab and clip and an s-10 frame.Can't wait to get started going to be a lot of fun.

This site is feeling very friendly already. I've solved my problem with the P/S pump. A friend of mine who owns a foreign car garage told me to bring him the P/S pump and he'll do a helicoil treatment on it to mend the stripped mounting bolt. This is like tapping it to a larger size and putting an insert in so the original bolt will fit securely again. I was going to attempt it myself, but he started talking about precise tapping and breaking tabs on the helicoil so I decided to accept his offer of a cheap fix. Now my only issues are the tail light functions, clutch adjustment, and finding a spare tire/rim. David |
