Body work newbie

Hello everyone i wanted to start doin body work on my old 87 but i really dont know what i would need or how to really do it, all i know is sand the hell out of it lol but anyways what would the basic person need to do say surface rust ? Thanks

You can see where i just spray painted the surface rust to stop it from spreading till i figure out how to fix it.Mostly on the bedName:  my truck.jpg
