How far is the master cylinder pushrod supposed to stick out.
How far is the master cylinder pushrod supposed to stick out.
I just bought this 72' truck a couple weeks ago. Truck has power brakes. The brake pedal is very hard all the time(vac hose was hooked up to booster before). The master cylinder looked like crap so i took it off and the rod seems to stick out very far. Currently it sticks out 1 1/4" past the mc mounting surface. Anybody know how far it is supposed to stick out?? I'm not sure if this is the reason why my brake are crappy or not. Thanks guys

It sounds like your booster needs replacing....IE no vacuum assist. That rod sticking out should be easy to push in and out by hand.

Re: How far is the master cylinder pushrod supposed to stick out.
the rod is in all the way right now. the rod comes out easy from the booster.
For where the rod is now, that would mean that the mc would be pushed in over 1 1/2" to begin with, is this right?

Re: How far is the master cylinder pushrod supposed to stick out.
If it helps, 3/4T and 1/2T brake equipment is different...including master cyl rod lengths, etc.

Re: How far is the master cylinder pushrod supposed to stick out.
Push rod looks ok to me, just like mine. Just make sure that the hole in the master cylinder piston is the same length as your push rod so that the push rod just almost bottoms out in the hole but does NOT bottom out. Make sure booster is hooked up to full manifold vacuum like at the intake or the baseplate of the carb. May want to use a Mity Vac and make sure that the booster is not leaking. Autozone has replacements for about $100.
