So you're doin' (or have done) a frame off Restoration...
i got to wondering how many ppl are in the process of doin' a frame off restoration... (or have already completed one). i know a lot of guyz on the board have their rigs as daily drivers, which is great... but i'm just wondering how many guys are doin' frame off restors... its definitely a different perspective at looking at things if you jump in your ride to go to work everyday, or if you've had it down to nothing, checking every nut and bolt...
well, things on mine are taking shape (FINALLY!!!) and i'm hopefully going to take a lil cruise 'round the block this weekend in mine... first time it'll be moved since it was torn down... |

I'm doing a two-step frame-off restoration. I've almost completed the chassis from the firewall back. Next, I'll start with the front!

I'm in the middle of a frame off resto. It's very time consuming but o so satisfying. It's now in the last faze, it is painted and I have to finish the built up (electrical system and interior). But I've just bought a new house and that eating up all my time at the moment so my project is on hold now. I hope to start again in July or August.

i've just begun mine. i bought a SWB frame in August, and started immediately from there, using most of the parts from my '82 C10 (which was LWB). i agree with Sam, it is time consuming, but very satisfying. if something isn't "right" i can fix it now very easliy, and i dont have worry about someone else screwing my stuff up.

Me too, me too...
I'm doing a frame off restoration on my 86 C10. So far its really just a pile of parts. I'm using a 76 frame, an 86 cab, new GM fenders, Goodmark cowl induction hood, doors from a wrecking yard with power guts from another pair of wrecking yard doors, a box from yet another wrecked truck and the engine and trans from my 86 LWB that I rebuilt early in 2002. My progress has been slow lately because I've been working on making my 87 a dependable daily driver and rebuilding the rear end of my 84. Too many trucks and not enough time and money!!!

Mine is getting every nut and bolt replaced modified painted or plated. I don't think the end result will be considered a restoration though....

A friend of mine started a frame-off with his '84 Dodge Ram 4WD in Feb 1998. He's now in the process of parting it out. So far he has $18K sunk in it and a pile of parts to show for it. The worst part is that it was ready to go back together. The poor guy got laid off and sold the motor to cover rent one month and the wheels/tires to cover the next.
That's why I'm skiddish about pulling mine apart. With a family to feed and a mortgage to pay I wanna have a good chunk of the cash in hand before I start.

Add me to the list of Frame Off nuts! I've got my '75 Blazer ready to lift the body off, but WOW is that thing heavy (cab plus tub all in one!).
Going to pull the chassis out from under the body. Probably will send the body for stripping and paint and work the chassis over myself. I'm blessed with a body that is absolutely immaculate. VERY little rust in the drivers rocker, and drivers rear quarter. That's it, period. I was very excited about that! Nuts and bolts are out of the body mounts, just trying to get the nerve to lift her off!

Well, I had a big day today, so I thought I'd share it with the frame off guys! This is the first time I've ever done this, and well, today was the day the body and frame were separated.
No real problems, except for a crached windshield. Now I'm looking in my garage and suddenly i feel like I have two projects instead of one!

I bet gettin the tub off the frame was quite a feat! If you are like me and HAD a two-car garage...kiss that goodbye!! You will be crowded until the body goes back on...once it goes back on it will feel like you had an addition added to the garage!
Keep us posted. ...Jeff |

Two frame off's side by side, one of my '74 and one of my dad's '72. The shop is really a mess when you do two at once.

In the middle of a frame up rebuild on my 2wd Jimmy. Mine is all custom so there is nothing restored at all. Matter of fact there is not much of the original truck left. Most of the custom work is above my head so I am paying for it.
