Ideal way to pull motor?

Well since a chain is a horrible idea for attaching at the front corner on one side and the rear corner on the other side (way heavier than the 280Z motor which pulls easily this way), I'm going to need a strap of some sort to put around the motor. What kinda strap and where do you guys put it to pull a 235 out the most balanced and least troublesome way?

The guy I got the spare motor from just had a chain around the oil pan but I don't want to risk denting anything or it shifting when being lifted due to the chain not being a flat surface.

Nothing wrong with using a chain, it's all in how it's attached. On a 235 the corner head bolts work. If the manifolds aren't attached I use the rear manifold bolt instead of the head bolt.

I've always used a chain...from one corner to the other.

Any two 3/8" min. bolts will support the weight of a sbc or 235. Just make sure they are threaded in a minimum of 1/2" and tight to the chain and block with a washer.

Personally I like the plates that bolt on the intake manifolds and they are inexpensive.
Doh nevermind I jsut realized this was for a 235.

I just used a chain to pull a 350/th350 combo out of my 70 Suburban without issue. It was a bit rear heavy since the trans was on it, but lifted just fine.

i've chained my original 235 my replacement 235 and my new 350. it works! and it's cheep!

I bought this from Summit. I have also found cheaper ones all over the net.
I have yet to use it but am looking forward to it as it should really help having the engine more balance, side to side, as well as the tilt.

Nonhog, I got mine at Tractor Supply! Works great but wrapping a chain around the in/ex manifold on one side and a bolt on the other is just fine for a 216/235.

I've used a chain on dozens of them. The only issue is don't use a chain that is too light and don't hook to bolts that are too small especially ones that may be in shear.

I've seen a couple of under sized chains (actually the results of) break and I have seen a chain with a previously damaged link break so one needs to use a properly sized chain for the job.
I've also seen bolts that were in shear break but that is usually when the bolt is too long and the chain is loose on it or the bolt is too small to do the lifting in shear.
I used an engine lifting chain similar to this one http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ctModelId=5567 for years in the school shop I taught in and that style works well. Google engine lifting chain and several examples show up.

My preference on the six would be to use the head bolts or use slightly longer bolts in place of a pair of head bolts with the above style chain.

I'm not too found of the strap around the engine Idea as I think you might not have full control of the engine when it is lifted. Ok for an old engine going to scrap but I don't think it would be the best for trying to install one in a truck.

yep, chain and cherry picker is all ive used. i would much rather use a chain from one head to the opposite side than the intake mani. contraption. 4 tiny bolts held in by aluminum? im sure that they will work just fine, but just a bit nerve racking for me.
