Column shift to floor shift
Ok, I know...lots of questions, just doing my research before I make a decision on what I am going to do. 67 GMC Short Step 6 cyl, Three on tree. What is involved and how intense to move the tree on tree to floor shift? Any kits available, cost etc?? Thanks

Re: Column shift to floor shift
I know it's possibly. I will probably be picking up a 69 shortly with that combo that was switched to floor shift. Not sure what was used, but I plan to part the truck, so it may be available in a month or so. I will try to see if I can get pictures of it in the mean time.

Re: Column shift to floor shift
The hardest part is cutting the hole. Everything just bolts on after that. 2 hour job tops. Spend the money and get the actual Hurst shifter. I tried a Sparkomatic first and it was junk. Prob not even available anymore.

I'll second spending the money and by a Hurst. This is the Jegs link just because it was easy to find this morning. http://www.jegs.com/p/Hurst/Hurst-3-...45821/10002/-1 Either that one or it's Mr Gasket equivalent is what I would suggest. As someone else said, don't buy one of those "Joe Cheap" universal off brand shifters as about all they are good for is helping break your trans sooner or later. Check your local shops and O'Reillys and Autozone as either of those might beat or match the price over the counter and you shouldn't have to pay the shipping. But make sure of what you are buying either way as they do sell "just" the shifters and then they sell the "kits" with all the needed pieces. I've got an Indy shifter on the full syncro trans that I have in the 48 and have had it for around 20 years and it has never needed anything more than a bit of cleaning and lubrication and adjustment once in a while. |

Re: Column shift to floor shift
Hey Jblackie. Still kickin' are ya. IMHO the hardest part putting a floor shifter in is installing the boot to cover the hole. I've never been lucky drilling through the carpet to make screw pilot holes. I used a Mr. Gasket with a 18" tall shifter to clear the bench. Part #7667A.

Yeah Geezer, I'm still out there. taking it day-by-day. Don't have to worry about drilling the carpet if you got the old bare-bones rubber mat.

Re: Column shift to floor shift
I installed a used Hurst Indy 3-speed over the weekend I got from a member for $35 shipped. It shifts like butter so far. 3 on the tree is cool, but this is a lot more fun. If you search the parts board, I thought I saw another one for sale...I think it was $35 plus shipping. Good luck.

Re: Column shift to floor shift
I didn't want to cut a huge hole, so I was conservative and had to do a little trimming. The picture shows the shifter in 1st gear...plenty of clearance.
